Mets closer takes title for first time

Armando Benitez claimed his first National League Rolaids Relief Man title. The Mets' closer is only the fourth winner in the 26 seasons Rolaids has been honoring relief pitchers who was born outside of the United States. Benitez was born in Ramon Santana in the Dominican Republic while Mariano Rivera, this year's American Leauge winner, comes from Panama City, Panama. The other foreign-born winners also came from the Dominican Republic -- 2000 N.L. champ Antonio Alfonseca of Florida, who is from LaRomana, and 1995 A.L. winner Jose Mesa of Cleveland, born in Azua. Mesa was a N.L. contender this year for Philadelphia.

Benitez, who finished second behind Alfonseca last season, held off Hoffman, the 1998 N.L. champion by two points, 130-128. The 28-year-old Benitez became the National League's ninth consecutive first-time winner. All-time saves leader Lee Smith was the last repeater, winning in 1991 and 1992 at St. Louis.

Despite getting the wrath of some fans and media when he had trouble in two late-season efforts against Atlanta, Benitez had a stellar season with a team-record 43 saves in only 46 chances, three tough saves and a 6-4 record.

Hoffman, who became the first reliever ever with five 40-save seasons and the first with four in a row, matched Benitez with a 43-3 save/blown save record and had seven tough saves but finished with a 3-4 record. Hoffman also was runnerup in 1996 and 1999, losing the first time on a tie-breaker to Jeff Brantley of Cincinnati and three years later by five points to Houston's Billy Wagner.

I agree. All Mets fans need lots of Rolaids for their hearts everytime Benitez pitches and loses another big game.

Rolaids Relief Man? (Wacky-Zany-Riffic horn 2X)

Benitez and Rivera are on opposite ends of the "closer effectiveness" spectrum. Two blown saves in the final week-and-a-half of the season should disqualify you even from such a ridiculous award.

And to think I used to actually check the standings of that crap every day. Has anyone but me ever heard of the "Rolaids Relief Man (Ho-Ho!)" before today?
