CINCINNATI – The Cincinnati Bengals made their most important
decision of free agency Thursday, signing quarterback Jon Kitna to
a four-year contract.

The deal is for $7 million, but including a $4 million signing bonus
and other potential incentives, it could end up being worth as much
as $12 million.

Kitna, who lost his starting job with the Seattle Seahawks
last season, will compete with Akili Smith for the starting
job in training camp.

Coach Dick LeBeau said the Bengals won't pursue
another quarterback in free agency, though he didn't rule
out the possibility of Scott Mitchell returning to join the
competition if no one else signs him.

"I like our quarterback situation where it is," LeBeau said. "You
never say never, but with Akili and Scott Covington and now Jon
Kitna as a Cincinnati Bengal, I think we have a very good
quarterback situation."

Kitna, 28, is the second free agent signed this week by the Bengals,
who were farther under the salary cap than any other team. Former
Minnesota defensive tackle Tony Williams signed Tuesday.

The Bengals also focused on their biggest need on defense
Thursday, talking to pass-rushing end Kenny Holmes from
Tennessee.

Unable to land Elvis Grbac, the Bengals went after the second-tier
quarterbacks available in free agency.

By signing Kitna, the Bengals set up a competition between two
quarterbacks who lost their starting jobs last season. Smith was
benched after the 10th game last season in favor of Mitchell.

Smith finished with a 52.8 passer rating, the lowest among NFL
regular quarterbacks. He threw for 1,253 yards with three
touchdowns and six interceptions.

Kitna had a 75.6 rating, throwing for 2,658 yards with 18
touchdowns. He also threw 19 interceptions, third-most in the NFL.

Had they landed Grbac, the Bengals would have essentially been
giving up on Smith, their No. 1 draft pick two years ago. By signing
Kitna, they've given him a chance to win back his job.

"This will be a fair and open competition," LeBeau said. "I don't
think anybody going in has the edge."

John Kitna sucks.
So he should fit in pretty nicely in Cincinnati.
The Islanders of the NFL.

Neither of them is the answer for the Bengels. They need to spend a lot more money than they're willing to cough up.

DILLON - SORRY I couldn't help it ;) is definately a VERY GOOD RB, but they are screwing around with him too much money-wise the past few years.

They both complete more passes to the other team than they throw TDs to their own teammates. Didn't Smith only have one year at major college level? He needs more reps. I'm not sure there is a QB they can draft that would be any better this year. Vick - I feel is gonna be a BIG BUST.
