It's true. Cristiano da Matta "kicks butt." Today, the 1998 Dayton Indy Lights champ made Carl Haas and Paul Newman look like geniuses in choosing him to replace Michael Andretti in the #6 Texaco/Havoline/Kmart Lola/Toyota, as the diminutive Brazilian swept past polesitter Kenny Brack just before the Swede made his final pit stop.

Da Matta then kept his cool under the last caution for teammate Christian Fittipaldi's smack of the final turn 12 wall. He made a great restart to lead ailing, dehydrated 2000 CART FedEx champ Gil de Ferran's #1 Marlboro Team Penske Reynard/Honda to the checkered flags by 1.982 seconds in a thrilling inaugural Tecate Telmex Monterrey Grand Prix.

Paul Tracy finished third in his #26 Team Kool Green Reynard/Honda, running a savvy race from 15th starting spot, in spite of a few wheel-to-wheel contacts along the way. Michael Andretti took fourth in his first start for Team Motorola in his #39 Reynard/Honda, while Brack finished fifth in the #8 Shell Lola/Ford after an electrical problem and fading brakes slowed him.

Eighteen cars saw the checkered flags, with only Shinji Nakano in his Fernandez Racing #52 Reynard/Honda failing to complete the 78-lap distance. Jimmy Vasser took 6th in his debut for Patrick Racing, driving the #40 OXXO Reynard/Toyota. Tony Kanaan brought Mo Nunn's #55 Hollywood Reynard/Honda home 7th, while Helio Castroneves persevered in the #3 Marlboro Team Penske Reynard/Honda, suffering gearbox woes from the green flags.

Dario Franchitti, in the #27 Team Kool Green Reynard/Honda and rookie Tora Takagi, driving Derrick Walker's #5 Pioneer/DENSO Reynard/Toyota, rounded out the top ten. Rookie Nicolas Minassian battled an ill-handling #12 Team Target Lola/Toyota to take 11th, and Max Papis, whose first pit stop in the #7 Miller Lite Lola/Ford was long when the fuel coupling failed, took home the final point.

Da Matta praised the Fundidora Park 2.104-mile circuit, saying, "The course is interesting. I like the smoothness of the track. Only the dirt bothered any of the drivers. I'm sure the track will be much better when we come back next year." The third-year Champ Car driver used the HANS device during this race, mandated for oval events this year but optional for road courses. He said it didn't bother him at all during the race. "If the HANS brings me this kind of performance, it's great," he grinned.

While de Ferran was unavailable for comments following the event, having gone to CART's medical facility for re-hydration, Paul Tracy came to talk about his race. "I knew I had to be smooth and consistent every lap, after we made a mistake in qualifying. I was the first to test the turn 12 wall, and it's a slippery corner. I knew I didn't want to make mistakes like that in the race. I know I bumped Kenny from behind, but that's racing."

When asked if the Brazilians are the guys to beat in this year's 21-race FedEx series, Tracy replied, "Well, I guess we showed them this Canadian has something for them."

While da Matta gained 21 points for his victory, leading the most laps, he also gave Toyota its first win on a permanent road course and took Lola Cars one victory closer to the 100-win mark. The chassis-maker now has 98 wins.

The CART FedEx Championship Series now takes a brief hiatus, before the battle begins anew on the streets of Long Beach, CA., where race #2, the 27th annual Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach starts the busy section of the season, April 6-8.
