Jeff Van Gundy Resigns as Coach of New York Knicks
December 8, 2001 11:43 am EST

NEW YORK (Ticker) - Jeff Van Gundy, who took the New York Knicks to the National Basketball Association finals in 1999, unexpectedly stepped down as coach on Saturday.
Assistant Don Chaney will coach the team in Saturday night's home game against the Indiana Pacers.

"We are surprised by Jeff's decision to leave the organization suddenly after 13 years," New York General Manager Scott Layden said. "Jeff's coaching abilities, passion to succeed and tireless work ethic were responsible for much of the Knicks' success during his tenure. We are sorry to see him leave, we thank him and wish him well.

A decision on the coaching duties for the remainder of the season will be made "as soon as possible."

No reason was given for Van Gundy's departure, but he ended practice 15 minutes early on Friday, upset with the team's level of intensity.

The Knicks started slowly this season with just four victories in their first 11 games, but have won five of their past six contests and are in fourth place in the Atlantic Division with a 10-9 record.

Van Gundy, 39, was in his seventh season as Knicks' coach.

During the lockout-shortened 1999 season, Van Gundy guided the Knicks to the NBA Finals, where they lost to the San Antonio Spurs.

Anyone see this coming?

It's been an adventurous and dissapointing seven years with TheGund, but he's left us with long-lasting images that we won't soon forget:

Where's Gundy?

Good riddance! I knew that midget would be fired sooner or later, but now he just gives up on the team like that.

His tema lacks intensity? He sure didnt lack any when he decided to claw on Alonzo's leg. My god that was the funniest thing I've ever seen!

Is it safe to assume the Knicks are really fucked now?

JVG was a good coach and a good guy. Happy trails and good decision leavin the team now that they suck. Pat Riley should be taking notes.

Brand new head coach, same old Knick win.

In case you missed it, Knicks had a 17-point lead with 6 minutes to go or something, but the Pacers came back to lead it 96-94 before the Knicks won it 101-99.

And for those of you who think he is, Jeff Van Gundy wasn't the biggest coward the Knicks had to contend with today. Guess hoo was at the game tonight:

Probably his girlfriend, Beth Ostrovsky. Damn, does he look fucking old. He could easily be mistaken for an ugly old woman. Facelift pretty soon for Stern.

I liked Van Gundy a lot. The Knicks were his life for the past decade. No one in the league worked harder than he did. After every game he looked absolutely drained. It was pussy of him though to ditch mid season. I don't think this years team has the same feel as previous NY teams, and i don't think Van Gundy felt like burning himself out trying to build something.

I loved his hard work ethic but aside from him dragging on to Zo's leg anyone remember when his Honda Civic was turned over by the knicks team jet's engine? How about the time when Camby tried to punch a San Antonio player but he decked him instead?

Seriously he's been through a lot. He lost his college roomate(and b-ball teamate) and someone else on 9/11

Hopefully he can rest now. Maybe he will coach Miami or coach else where.

The man was a great coach and gave us everything that he had for 13 years. Plus, he went out without anyone actually forcing him out. He will make a fine coach for another team down the road, best of wishes to him.
