DAVIE, Fla. (AP) -- Quarterback Ray Lucas, unhappy about the way his stock slipped with the New York Jets, signed an offer sheet Friday on a three-year, $2.75 million contract with the Miami Dolphins.

The Jets have until next Friday to match the offer or they'll lose Lucas, a restricted free agent with no compensation. Their other quarterbacks are Vinny Testaverde and Chad Pennington.

Lucas, a five-year veteran, spent the past four seasons with the Jets. Last year he appeared in seven games as a reserve, and completed 20-of-40 passes for 203 yards with no touchdowns and four interceptions.

When Testaverde was hurt in 1999, Lucas went 6-3 as a starter, including two victories over the Dolphins. But the Jets drafted Pennington a year ago and consider him their quarterback of the future.

The Dolphins opted for Lucas over Gus Frerotte, who earlier came in for a visit but wants a starting job.

``We felt if we could get a player who would improve that position and bring a dimension to our team that gave us an opportunity to be better, we would pursue that,'' coach Dave Wannstedt said. ``Ray definitely does that.''

Terry Bradway, the Jets' general manager, was noncommittal about whether the team would match the offer.

``This is all part of the process in the NFL,'' he said. ``We have a week to look at the situation and make a determination as to what's in the best interest of our football team.''

If Lucas joins Miami he'll likely back up Jay Fiedler, a first-year NFL starter last year. That's fine with Lucas, who met with Fiedler during his visit.

``I have to mix with the guys and have some camaraderie,'' Lucas said. ``I'm just coming in here low man on the totem poll, and I've got to work my way up.''

The offer sheet includes an $800,000 signing bonus, $700,000 for the first year and numerous incentives.

The Dolphins also re-signed guard Ben Adams to a two-year contract. He spent all of last season on their practice squad.

I'd expect a good pool of QB talent in the free agent market over the next two seasons. It shouldn't be a problem. It will be interesting to see where Aikman winds up now that the Dolphins signed Lucas.

The Fox Sports website is speculating that KC may be interested in Aikman. They are looking for a QB since Elvis has left the building and Warren Moon retired

Yeah but what did Lucas do in his oppurtunities last season. He was awful. He isnt in their future plans. Lucas had a great season in 99 but I cant see him keeping those numbers up long term.

1999 - Ray knew he was the man once given the chance so he received all the reps in practice.

2000 - He received only spot duty and couldn't get into a groove.

Ray knows the system, but ya gotta give Chad a chance to show what he has. I NEVER felt comfortable with Ray at the helm. If Chad is supposed to take over in 2002 or 2003 gotta let him be closer to the action.

Two Words: Chad Pennington. The future of the Jets and the future of the NFL. When Vinny goes down, I give it 2 games, Chad will be there and beat up on Lucas when they play each other.

I think the jets should look into getting another QB vinny is the worst they need to get rid of him they need to pick up a decent Qb to atleast make it to the playoffs.
