Fox agrees to take over Panthers

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- New York Giants defensive coordinator John Fox has reached agreement to become the head coach of the Carolina Panthers, ESPN.com has learned.

The team will introduce him at a Friday 4 p.m. press conference.

Fox, 46, succeeds George Seifert, who was dismissed the day after the regular season finale and following a disastrous 1-15 campaign. In three seasons, Seifert was 16-32 in Carolina.

It is believed that Fox will sign a five-year contract worth about $1 million annually.

The Panthers offered Fox the job on Thursday evening after he met for a second time with team officials. At that Thursday session, Carolina management apparently questioned Fox about the events that led him to abruptly leave the Oakland Raiders during the 1995 season.

He has never addressed the issue publicly, except with generic responses, but his explanation must have been good enough for Panthers ownership.

Fox first interviewed for the job last week and Panthers management was clearly impressed with him. He became the favorite to succeed Seifert after Tony Dungy rejected an offer from Carolina and accepted a deal to become head coach of the Indianapolis Colts instead.

Fox interviewed last year for the Buffalo Bills head coach job.

Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Marvin Lewis met with Carolina officials on Tuesday night and part of Wednesday. The team also interviewed New York Jets defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell.

The Panthers have spoken to coaches around the league about Fox and he has received very solid recommendations from the group surveyed.

"Everyone we've talked to said that, when they play the Giants, his defense is always difficult to prepare for," said one Panthers source. "And we really liked his demeanor. The term that we keep hearing is that he really 'connects' well with his players. That's very important to us."

Fox began his professional coaching career with the Los Angeles Express of the USFL in 1985. He had stints with the Pittsburgh Steelers (1989-91), San Diego Chargers (1992-93), Los Angeles Raiders (1994-95) and St. Louis Rams (1996), before joining the New York staff in 1997. He also coached at seven colleges.

Over the past few days, Fox has been contacting potential candidates for his staff. The favorite to become offensive coordinator in Carolina is current Giants tight ends coach Mike Pope. Among the other possible assistants on the offensive side of the ball are Richard Williamson, Jim Skipper, Paul Boudreau and Scott O'Brien. Boudrea is the incumbent Panthers offensive line coach and O'Brien the current special teams coach.

Giants officials might now approach former Denver and Buffalo head coach Wade Phillips about succeeding Fox as their defensive coordinator.

I wish Fox the best, but i HATE to see him go. he was a great defensiver planner. And just as important, the Giants players really seemed to like and get along w/ him.

I hate to lose this guy, but wish him the best. Granted the defensive production slipped in terms of rankings this year, but it wasnt Fox's fault. Guys just didnt produce (especially the corners). Plus, Fox seemed to have the defensive scheme to shut down the Rams in St Louis, and the Eagles in the 1st of 2 games. If anyone, id rather have Sean Payton go, but I wouldnt even want him to leave either.

There is word that Wade Phillips might replace Fox as defensive coordinator. They can do better.
