menino, that is called INTERNATIONAL PRESS, its for this little thing called the olympics

the whole front section is full of them they're not just for press. even if it was just gor press, They've been doing the olympics for decades and they've gotten by without giving each reporter a huge screen. I'm not saying they shouldn't have some technology there but this is just ridiculous. It's annoying as hell watching players go up and down the ice and seeing hundreds of computer screens.

The whole TV side of the building is for the press, its not regular fans, and whats the big deals if they have computers? Who cares.

Canada gets a huge break, by getting to play Finland instead of Russia.

Heres my new predictions the rest of the way.

Quarterfinals
Sweden over Belarus
Canada over Finland
Czech Republic over Russia
United States over Germany

SEMIFINALS
Canada over Sweden
United States over Czech Republic

GOLD MEDAL GAME
Canada over United States

BRONZE MEDAL GAME
Sweden over Czech Republic

obviously your not basing this on what we have seen the past few days.

I agree that I am going with Canada to win it, but to say they will win no question? You cant say that after the way they have played so far. And the US will be lucky to get a Bronze? Well they have looked about 5 times better than Canada so far. And all they have to do is win 1 of 2 games to win at least a bronze. Not counting their win over Germany coming up.

My Picks:

Quarters:
USA over Germany
Russia over Czec Republic
Sweden over Belarus
Finland over Canada

Semis:
USA over Russia
Sweden over Finland

Bronze Medal Round:
Finland over Russia

Gold Medal Round:
Sweden over USA

Gold: Sweden
Silver: USA
Bronze: Finland

USA has a great team but Sweden is just a dominant force and the Czec's aren't the same as they were Nagano. Finland is also a good team that you shouldn't sleep on.

I would be very surprised if Finland beat Canada. I dont think Russia took Finland as seriously as they should of and thats what got Finland that #2 position.

I cant trust Finland's chances when they have 2 NHL backup goaltenders as their goalies. Canada wil step up their play in the elimination games, and you saw yesterday that they are starting to gel and play like a team.

I think Canada got a huge break getting a tie and not a win, because Finland is much better matchup than Russia. Finland has Selanne,Kappanen, and Lehtinen, but their offense nor their defense matces up with the talent of Canada.

I expect Canada to have very little problem beating Finland.

And to throw something out there, the US better not take Germany for granted and think that they can just show up and they will win. If you saw the Germany-Canada game. Germany could have easily won that game. Canada scored 2 goals on a questionable major penalty, and Germany had some golden oppurtunities late.

No i think the US is going into the game with germany with the same objective as they did against belarus. Its true, canada almost blew it but the difference is that the US is a more coherant team than canada is and thats why the US has been sucessful than canada. Maybe if canada changed their lines and be more aggressive, they may have a shot at going to the medal round. But thats a big if.

The only problem for the United States in terms of grabbing the gold medal is that they're going to have a much tougher semi-final game than Canada.

I am actually fairly confident that the US players have a lot of resolve to strive for the gold. They haven't looked out place in this tournement at all thus far. They've probably been the most consisten team, actually.

The big question is will the game against Russia prove to be a tiring, gruelling match, or something that inspires them and brings them even closer together.

I would say that the US, if they can beat Russia, will have far more momentum going into the gold medal game than Canada.

The bottom line here though is that Canada wants the gold more than the United States. They care way more about the gold, they were expected to win going in, they've got a shitload of pressure on them to win (it's all they ever fucking talk about in Canada up to this point in the NHL season - ad naseum type stuff).

But ahh the intangibles. Home ice advantage can always play a role, the whole Miracle on Ice mystique that every member of Team USA is aware of, especially with Herb Brooks coaching the squad...

I remember those World Cup of Hockey games between the US and Canada. They were the best. I went to a lowly exhibition US-Canada game in Vancouver back in 96 I guess it was. One of the best games I've ever seen. SO intense. They played like they hated each other.

I might be getting ahead of myself here, but I really, really would love to see a Canada-US final. That would be a great thing for the NHL. You'd have two teams where the big ice and red-line advantage would be a wash (both teams would be at the same advantage or disadvantage because neither team uses the big ice as well as the Eurotrash).

I can't wait.

What an awesome third period tonight. Too bad for Russia, they played like ass in the first two. Oh well, I only like two players on that team anyway.

Obviously, I was rooting for this final since I missed out on the World Cup Game 3 since I had no way of finding a TV to watch it. Then I watched their game in the 98 Olympics and the US got spanked hard. So its redemption time here.

I still think that Canada is much deeper than the Americans. I mean, fuck, Joe Thornton couldn't even make the team. And then you look at Team USA and you see Aaron Miller. Ranks right up there with the Joel Otto debacle. Anyway, Richter looked unbelievable after the two goals tonight so I hope he holds form. Damn, I never thought I'd be rooting for a piece of shit Ranger over Marty Brodeur. Lets go USA.

But there's also this: there are over 5,000 men in this city, who know that being a policeman is an endless, glamourless, thankless job that's gotta be done.

I know it, too, and I'm damn glad to be one of them."

It's going to be one helluva game. I think any talent advantage that Canada has will be negated by the home ice and crowd advantage that the United States will have.

In essence, this could very well be one of the best hockey games you've ever seen.

I'm giddy with excitement already - I'll be happy whichever team wins, really. Odds are the winner will definitely deserve it.

The only thing that I hope is that it doesn't come down to a shootout. Blecchhhh!

That was a tough 3rd period to sweat out but they got the job done. I wish though that Malakhov would have waited until Tuesday to score a goal from the point, but we got the victory.

Now Richter will beat Brodeur on Sunday, and then he will beat him again on Tuesday.

Yeah i Hear rumors that with the Devils having a game against Philly on Wednesday, that Vanbiesbrouk may play against the Rangers, but Ill believe that when I see it. Brodeur has played about the last 30005366 games against the Rangers, and unlike the Islanders, where backup goalies play every night, the Rangers never face backup goalies.

Anyway I see a great game on Sunday, if I had to pick a winner, Id still go with Canada, but this is a toss up, and is going to be a great game. cant wait.

It's going to be a great one tomorrow in the match up we've all been waiting for..As JD said for some of the Russians to be bitching last nite when the game was over (Darius Kasparitis, what a surprise)is ridiculous but whatever..In rooting for the US I always wanna see the NYR guys do good but as long as (Erica) Lindros does not get hurt I'll be happy...Final score 4-3 USA...Do they name an MVP?

our boys in red, white, and blue are one win away from gold, sweet. you guys are right, that third period was a tough one to watch last night, sweated out every posession. was good to see the Ruskies finally wake the eff up after two periods to make a game of it.
I look for one hell of a game tomorrow, friggin' all out war, nothing held back. battles in the corners, fights for every loose puck and in the end, USA 3 Canada 2.
Do you believe in miracles, again?

This is gonna be a sweet Gold Medal game. I hope it comes down to a shootout. It would be so sweet if Richter stopped Lindros on the last shot. My prediction: USA wins 2-1 in OverTime.

Any shootout would taint the victory of either team. The players definitely don't want it to go to shootouts. It's a lame way to decide things - why not just flip a coin at the beginning of the game?

Shootouts suck.

This would never happen, but I'd love it if both teams refused to go to the shootout and would insist on playing until someone scores.

Any talk of the NHL adopting some Olympic hockey new rules. Larger Ice surface would be hard to do in arenas that have NBA/NHL/Other activities there. 2 Line pass is another thing they might look at.

The problem with the two-line passes is that while many think that it will provide more offense and cut down on the neutral zone trap, it actually encourages the trap.

If you look at Germany in the Olympics they were fairly successful just jamming 5 players up at the blue line.

I don't know if the occasional goal-sucking breakaway would make up for extra trapping. Unless the NHL comes up with some sort of "illegal defense" type rule, I really doubt you'll see the elimination of the two-line pass rule.

The thing that you're most likely to see is a variation on the 15 second quick faceoffs, which of course will be modified to take into account TV timeouts.

The big thing to remember is the reason why there seems to be more fluid offense in these games is because you're watching the best players in the world.

In other words, Donald Brashear seems to have missed making Team USA :)

It's amazing though if you checked out the USA Russia game NBC missed the first few seconds of game time after their commercial breaks. It's true though the talent level in the Olympics is obviously much higher so to expect that level on a daily basis is unreasonable in the NHL.

Shortening the season would be a good 1st step though.
