2002 CART preview
By Robin Miller
ESPN.com

Team Penske isn't around to go for a third straight CART FedEx Championship Series crown and the car count is down to 20, but the 2002 CART season looks to be as wide open as the turns at Cleveland.

No less than seven teams and 12 drivers have a legitimate shot at the title, which will be contested over the next nine months in 21 races over three continents.

Here's a forecast of the action:

Drivers to watch

Andretti
Michael Andretti: CART's all-time winner will be 40 by the time this season is over and, while he's not the throttle psycho who dominated in the early '90s, he's still capable of getting to the front. A last hurrah?

Kenny Brack: Won the most races and poles last year, in addition to leading the most laps, yet wound up second in the point standings. Nobody drives his car, or team, any harder and this feisty Swede is in the prime of his career. He'll try and put Target/Ganassi Racing back in the throne room.

Cristiano da Matta: This little dynamo scored three wins in 2001 for Newman/Haas Racing and blew everybody away during last month's sneak preview practice at Laguna Seca. If the new Lola chassis is up to it on road courses, da Matta could easily be Da Man.

Tony Kanaan: True, he's only won once in three years and none during the past two for Morris Nunn Racing but he's always had the speed to contend - just not much in the way of good breaks. The Reynard/Honda combination has ruled the past six years. Why not seven?

Dario Franchitti: After losing '99 crown to Juan Montoya on a tie breaker, this talented Scotsman has struggled to regain that winning edge (only one victory in past two years) so he should be more motivated than ever to earn No. 1.

Scott Dixon: Rookie of the year in 2001, the soft-spoken New Zealander dazzled everyone with his poise and savvy in a champ car. He won't sneak up on anyone this season because it's obvious he belongs up front.

Sleepers

Carpentier
Patrick Carpentier: Finally got his initial win last year after several near misses and this Canadian's confidence has finally caught up with his ability. If Ford can stay interested in its lame duck season, Carpentier can contend for the crown.

Oriol Servia: In two years, this aggressive Spaniard has shown much better than his results and now he's with a new team (PacWest) that can provide some depth and experience.

Bruno Junqueira: Had the unenviable job of taking Juan Montoya's place at Target/Ganassi in 2001 but came through with a win and a pole position as a rookie. If this Brazilian can learn consistency, he can give a few lessons.

On the hot seat

Tagliani
Alex Tagliani: Tags had at least two wins taken away by mechanical gremlins in 2001 and is still searching for victory lane. Has more than enough speed, but does he have the race craft to succeed? Almost 30, this will be a pivotal season.

Christian Fittipaldi: With only two wins in seven years, the nephew of Emerson has not lived up to the family reputation. His inconsistency is puzzling and, at 32, he probably needs a solid season to stay in play.

Rising stars
Townsend Bell: One of only two rookies in 2002 and one of only three Americans in CART, this former Indy Lights champion has the moxie, speed and confidence to make some big strides in his first year with Patrick Racing.

Something to prove

Fernandez
Adrian Fernandez: Lone owner/driver in CART suffered through a lot of teething problems in 2001 and hopes to regain his form of 2000.

Michel Jourdain: A six-year veteran who is still only 25 years old, Jourdain saved himself from the unemployment line by landing a big sponsor and taking it to Team Rahal. He's shown flashes of having what it takes but never anything approaching consistency. Maybe his first teammate (Vasser) can be the difference.

Paul Tracy: His undisputed talent (18 wins) has never sustained itself long enough to win a championship and, following a winless 2001, P.T. needs to bounce back strong.

Jimmy Vasser: The 1996 CART champion ran competitively all through 2001 but failed to find victory lane. Now with Team Rahal, the 36-year-old veteran must recapture his winning ways.

It's gonna be a great season!
Races will be shown on SPeedChannel, CBS, and FOX

Da Matta wins again at Monterrey

MONTERREY, Mexico -- Cristiano da Matta started the season just the way he ended 2001 -- with a victory.

In fact, by successfully defending his Monterrey Grand Prix title, the diminutive Brazilian now has three straight CART FedEx Series victories.

"The whole Newman-Haas team had a good offseason and we were really anxious to come into the first race and see if we could keep it going," da Matta said. "We put a lot of pressure on ourselves and it's good to get this off our back and know after five months we can still do it."

Da Matta ran a nearly flawless race Sunday on the 2.104-mile, 12-turn course in downtown Fundidora Park, but nearly got into trouble near the end of the 85-lap event after getting behind the slower cars of Michael Andretti, Tora Takagi and pole-winner Adrian Fernandez.

A combination of running faster than most of his competitors on nearly every lap on the slick racing surface and perfect pit strategy helped da Matta's Toyota-powered Lola to a lead of 18.521 seconds on lap 57.

Struggling to lap the three slower cars, though, da Matta's lead steadily diminished as Dario Franchitti's Honda-Reynard charged back into contention.

By the time Franchitti made his final pit stop on lap 74, the lead had been cut to under 5 seconds. Da Matta made his last stop on lap 77 and, as he left the pits, Tony Kanaan's car spun and tapped Takagi's from behind, bringing out the second caution flag of the race.

Takagi continued and was between the two leaders when the green flag came back out with three laps remaining. Franchitti couldn't get past the lapped car and da Matta drove off to his fifth career victory, beating the runner-up by 1.679-seconds -- about 10 car lengths.

The winner averaged 90.544 mph.

"I think our run at the end was spoiled by Takagi," Franchitti said. "We could have given da Matta a good run. I was just disgusted by what he did. CART needs to do something about that kind of situation."

Franchitti was happy, though, with CART's new rule eliminating fuel restrictions and allowing the drivers to race all out for the entire race.

"I really enjoyed this," he said. "We were absolutely flat out all the wall and it was magic. It's the way we're supposed to race."

Christian Fittipaldi, da Matta's teammate, wound up third, followed by local favorite Michel Jourdain, in his first drive for Team Rahal and the best of the three Mexicans in the race on Sunday.

The race got off to a rocky start when rookie Townsend Bell tried to pass both former champion Jimmy Vasser and Kenny Brack on the third turn of the race, igniting a multi-car crash that ended the day for all three drivers and caused lesser damaged to several other cars.

"I guess he thought he could win the race on that first lap," Vasser said of Bell. "If Kenny wasn't there, Bell would have blown off the track. So I went to the outside of them and I think someone backed into me.

"There was no way (Bell) was going to make that move stick. He'll learn from it, but it's unfortunate for guys like Brack and myself since we will be running for the championship all year."

Fernandez, one of the top sports figures in Mexico, started out front and led the first 14 laps before being passed for the top spot by Alex Tagliani. Fernandez fell out of contention and wound up a lap behind in 14th.

Tagliani also slipped back after the early going, but held on for fifth place

This week's quote : Hope in the face of our human distress helps us to understand the turbulence deep inside that takes hold of our lives - Shame and disgrace over mental unrest keeps us from saving those we love - The grace within our hearts and the sorrow in our souls - Deception of fame - Vengeance of war - Lives torn apart - Losing oneself - Spiraling down - Feeling the walls closing in - A journey to find the answers inside our illusive mind...

CART rocks. Can't wait until april 14th for the CART race in long beach california.

CART (championship auto racing teams) was born out of a power struggle between team owners who participated in the indy 500 and other USAC (united states auto club) races and the owners of the indianapolis motor speedway.

The basics of it are that the hulman family felt since they owned indy, they owned the sport. and the owners felt they should be able to grow the sport outside of indy. This was all back in the 70's.

Well today, the fight remains. Tony george, quite possibly the world's most inept business man, gained control of the speedway and declared war on CART. He kicked them out and since then, the indy 500 and all other races in N.America have suffered as a result.

Go CART.

CART Announces St. Petersburg Event

By: Eric Mauk

Detroit, Mich., March 18

Looking to fill some of the early-season gap in its schedule as well as take advantage of the racing crowds that flock to Florida every Spring, Championship Auto Racing Teams has announced that it will run its new St. Petersburg street race in February of 2003.

The newly-announced event, which has been in the planning stages since before new president Chris Pook took office, will run as the season opener for the 2003 campaign, replacing the Monterrey, Mexico event which has started each of the past two seasons. It was not immediately known how this announcement would affect the Monterrey event.

CART, the City of St. Petersburg and Dover Downs Entertainment signed a seven-year deal to run on a temporary street course with another option for five years tacked on to the end of the contract. The inaugural event will be run from Feb. 21-23 and will take place on a temporary circuit that will incorporate some of the streets of downtown St. Petersburg around the Bayfront Center as well as a portion of the Albert Whitted Airport.

"I am thrilled to hear that a sanctioning agreement between CART and the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg has been approved," said St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Baker. "This confirms that the best open wheel race drivers in the world will be running in downtown St. Petersburg next February. The city looks forward to welcoming event participants and patrons in our city and the worldwide television audience that will be watching the event."

Dover Downs will run the event as part of the agreement between DVD and CART that took place when DVD released Pook from his contract with them to take over the reins at CART.

"It has been no secret that we here at CART and our partners at Dover Downs Entertainment have been extremely interested in having a Champ Car race in St. Petersburg, and it is truly a pleasure that we are able to make this announcement today," said Pook. "The area is another major market in the United States and is a market that has been virtually untapped by major league auto racing until now.

"It seems only natural that we would open the CART FedEx Championship Series season in Florida during the month of February, considering that the state is the center of the motor racing universe during that time of year. We believe that racing fans throughout the southeastern portion of the United States will enjoy the opportunity to see motor racing in the world on the streets of St. Petersburg and we expect the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg to be an instant success."
