Massive Crash Takes Out Eight Cars At Melbourne Start

By: Eric Mauk

Melbourne, Australia, March 2

Williams/BMW may have done too good a job on its launch control system for its Formula 1 cars as a great start for Ralf Schumacher turned into calamity for nearly half the field at the start of today’s Australian Grand Prix.

Schumacher launched from the third spot on the grid and rapidly closed on polesitter Rubens Barrichello, who moved sideways to block as they headed into the first corner of the 2002 season. Schumacher did not slow down and drove over the top of the Ferrari of Barrichello, flying into the air and bouncing into the gravel trap.

Behind the flying Williams, chaos erupted as drivers braked hard to avoid the crash and wrapped themselves around each other. Eight cars were taken out in the first-lap accident and were unable to restart as the FIA inexplicably did not red-flag the race, sending the safety car out to collect the field.

"The decision not to stop the race was absurd," Jordan engineer Gary Anderson said, "What good is that to the millions of people watching across the world. It's the stupidest thing I've ever seen in my life. We've all got spare cars and we could have had 18 or so cars running around when the reality is that by the end of the race there could have been nobody left!"

Giancarlo Fisichella, Jenson Button, both Saubers of Nick Heidfeld and Felipa Massa, Olivier Panis and Allan McNish along with Schumacher and Barrichello were removed because of the accident.

David Coulthard inherited the lead with Renault’s Jarno Trulli running second ahead of Juan Pablo Montoya. Two-time defending F1 champion Michael Schumacher went through the grass on the outside of the first turn and escaped the melee but took the restart in the fourth spot.

"Obviously I didn't see everything," said Michael Schumacher. "I don't know if Rubens had a problem or what but I was afraid to turn into the corner because I saw cars flying by and I went through the grass which was probably a good decision."

The major benefactor of the crash were the two Jaguar cars of Eddie Irvine and Pedro de la Rosa who were to start in the penultimate row, but found themselves fifth and sixth after the incident. There are only 12 cars on the course at the restart as the two Arrows machines failed to start on the grid and were in the pits when the starting lights went out.

Phoenix team barred from F1

Looks like the new Phoenix team will not be allowed to take the grid at malaysia. Bernie and the FIA have said either pay up the 48 million and race in 2003 or go home and cry how you wasted @2 million on a few showcars.

man that Bernie is an A-hole.

The race is over.
It is 4:20 am.

Ralf Schumacher has won the race.
Juan Montoya in 2nd.
Michael Schumacher in 3rd.

Quick notes.
Malaysian tv converage was HORRIBLE.
The race stewards unfairly penalized Montoya for a racing incident.
Mercedes needs to get their act together.

Look like it will be a battle between ferrari and BMW/Williams all year long.

more details to follow.

Ralf Schumacher takes the spoils

By: Andy Hallbery

Sepang, Malaysia, March 17

Ralf Schumacher headed a Williams 1-2 at Sepang after a controversial race which saw his teammate Juan Pablo Montoya penalized for a start-line move which took the front wing from Michael Schumacher.

Both Montoya and Schumacher Sr fought their way back to the podium after the first corner incident, and naturally views differed. "I gave him room, he understeered, and I was pissed off," said Montoya. "After what happened in the first race I think the penalty is a bit extreme."

Schumacher had a different view: "Well, there wasn’t any room for me, and I lost my wing. But I don’t think there should have been a penalty. We need to have consistent rules."

Rubens Barrichello had the race in his hands until engine failure sidelined him. Ralf Schumacher employed an unusual one-stop strategy to gain the advantage

Jenson Button was headed for a third-placed podium finish until the final lap when Schumacher got by.

Results from the Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang follow:

1) Ralf Schumacher, Williams/BMW, (56 Laps)
2) Juan Pablo Montoya, Williams/BMW, (-39.7sec)
3) Michael Schumacher, Ferrari, (-1m1.795sec)
4) Jenson Button, Renault, (-1m11.767)
