U.S. Men's National Team vs. Ecuador (International Friendly)
ABC & Telemundo - LIVE!
4:00 p.m. ET / 3:00 p.m. CT / 2:00 p.m. MT / 1:00 p.m. PT

U.S. MEN TO FACE ECUADOR IN BIRMINGHAM ON MARCH 10: The United States Men's National Team will continue their World Cup preparations with an international friendly against fellow 2002 World Cup qualifiers Ecuador on March 10 at Legion Field Stadium in Birmingham, Ala., in a match that will be shown live on ABC at 4 pm ET.

Ecuador is coming off an impressive run through South American qualifying that included nine wins and four draws in 18 matches. The surprise team of the ten-team qualifying tournament, Ecuador finished second ahead of traditional South American powers Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Colombia.

Amazingly, the U.S. has never beat Ecuador in eight all-time match-ups. Ecuador holds a 4-0-4 record against the U.S., including a 0-0 draw on June 7, 2001, at Columbus Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio, in the teams' most recent match. In that game the two teams combined for 25 shots in a back-and-forth affair.

The U.S. will be returning to Birmingham's Legion Field Stadium for the first time since March 12, 2000, when the U.S. MNT drew 1-1 with Tunisia in front of 21,637 fans in the team's first-ever match in Alabama.

U.S. gets 6th shutout in 8 games

[Associated Press]

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Eddie Lewis scored a goal midway through the first half and the U.S. men's soccer team held on for a 1-0 victory over Ecuador in an exhibition match Sunday.

The U.S. team, comprised mostly of MLS/domestic-based players vying to make the 23-man World Cup roster, recorded its sixth shutout in eight games to beat Ecuador for the first time in nine meetings.

The Americans, who mostly controlled the action throughout, had four losses and four ties against the Ecuadoreans. They were shut out in seven of those meetings.

The U.S. team broke the deadlock in the 21st minute, when Lewis drilled the ball into the right corner of the goal off a pass from Clint Mathis. New goalkeeper Tim Howard made it stand.

The Americans' best chance of the second half came in the 86th minute when Brian McBride collided with goalkeeper Jose Francisco Cevallos trying to head the ball toward the goal off a long pass. Cevallos then knocked McBride to the ground as the American tried to chase down the ball.

The 23-year-old Howard, making his first appearance with the team, had a few close calls in the 32nd and 33rd minutes. First, he made a nice kick save against Carlos Tenorio. Then, Tenorio's header off a corner kick went wide right.

The Americans played the final 32 minutes a man down after Mathis received his second yellow card after fouling Tenorio. Mathis was coming off a two-goal performance against Honduras.

An expulsion from an international friendly match does not carry a suspension.

The crowd of 24,133 included several hundred yellow-clad Ecuador fans.

The U.S. team, which raised its record to 6-1-1 and has outscored opponents 14-2, play March 27 at Germany, then return home to face Mexico on April 3 in Denver and play at Ireland on April 17.

Final preparations include games against Uruguay on May 12 at Washington; Jamaica on May 16 at East Rutherford, N.J.; and the Netherlands on May 19 at Foxboro, Mass.

At the World Cup, the U.S. team plays Portugal (June 5), South Korea (June 10) and Poland (June 14), all in South Korea.

Ecuador, making its first appearance in the World Cup finals, will face Italy (June 3), Mexico (June 9) and Croatia (June 13) in the first round in Japan.

I hate to be the bearer of sanity around here but there is a world outside of American sports people. If this guy wants to support what is obviously to everyone, the world's most popular sport then let him do what he wants. And whackbag, only in America is it soccer. It's known around the world as futbol, fussball, football(in england) and many other names the translate to Football in english. So its football, mmmmmmmk?

Is that former hun, Claudio Reyna, capped for this one?

That useless wanker should have known better than to sign with Rangers - he grew up near Kearney, NJ, familiar with the Celtic-Rangers rivalry; both his parents are Catholics; every home game the hun support sing anti-Catholic songs.

And if that's not enough, maybe Tony Soprano's boys could pay the Judas a visit.

Arena confident American captain will be back soon

[Associated Press]

CHICAGO -- U.S. captain Claudio Reyna, bothered by a series of injuries, was dropped Wednesday from the American roster for the exhibition game at Germany on March 27.

Reyna, who missed the 1994 World Cup with a pulled right hamstring, missed three World Cup qualifiers last year because of a suspension and a groin pull. The Americans lost all three.

He played last fall with a bruised right knee, and badly bruised his left ankle Jan. 1 while playing for Sunderland in England. He played for the United States in a 1-0 loss at Italy on Feb. 13.

"If he has to, he could've probably played with us against Germany," U.S. coach Bruce Arena said, "but that's maybe pushing him too hard too early when we're thinking about the fact that he's just coming back from an injury."

Arena isn't worried about Reyna's longterm health.

"I'm confident Claudio will be ready for the World Cup," the coach said.

Other than Reyna, the Americans have nearly all their midfielders and forwards for the first time in a year. Brian McBride, Joe-Max Moore, Clint Mathis, Earnie Stewart, Landon Donovan, Cobi Jones and Jovan Kirovski are all on the roster. Arena skipped over Josh Wolff, who has a sore shoulder.

"This is about the healthiest we've been in a long time," Arena said. "We have a number of forwards I have to make some hard decisions on."

Kasey Keller will start in goal, and Tony Meola will be his backup. Brad Friedel, competing with Keller for the starting job at the World Cup, was skipped because his English club, Blackburn, has a busy schedule, including a trip to the United Arab Emirates.

Twelve on the 20 players on the U.S. roster are based in Europe.

Carlos Llamosa and Carlos Bocanegra were bypassed so Arena could evaluate European-based defenders. Cory Gibbs, a member of the under-23 team at the 1999 Pan American Games, was put on the roster and could make his international debut. Gibbs, 22, plays for St. Pauli in Germany.

Heading into the match at Rostock, the United States has won two straight against the Germans, outscoring them 5-0 in a pair of 1999 games.

The full roster:

Goalkeepers: Kasey Keller (Tottenham Hotspur, England), Tony Meola (Kansas City)

Defenders: Jeff Agoos (San Jose), Gregg Berhalter (Crystal Palace, England), Steve Cherundolo (Hannover 96, Germany), Cory Gibbs (St. Pauli, Germany), Frankie Hejduk (Bayer Leverkusen, Germany), Eddie Pope (DC United), David Regis (Metz, France), Tony Sanneh (Nuremberg, Germany)

Midfielders: Chris Armas (Chicago), Cobi Jones (Los Angeles), Eddie Lewis (Fulham, England), Clint Mathis (New York/New Jersey), John O'Brien (Ajax Amsterdam, Netherlands), Earnie Stewart (NAC Breda, Netherlands)

Forwards: Landon Donovan (San Jose), Jovan Kirovksi (Crystal Palace, England), Brian McBride (Columbus), Joe-Max Moore (Everton, England)

That hun-loving, stupid prick, useless cunt Reyna is OUT of Wednesday's friendly in Germany.

I hear his injury is related to destruction that Celtic did to him while he wore the jersey of Satan's XI - a.k.a. Rangers FC.

I hope he enjoys wasting away in Sunderland after those dirty orange bastards at Rangers fucked his career over for good.

I liked the small river about halfway between the goals on the left half side of the pitch myself. It just managed to get in the way of play too many times today.
