NEW YORK (March 12) -- The New York Rangers traded forwards Manny Malhotra and Barrett Heisten to the Dallas Stars on Tuesday for forwards Martin Rucinsky and Roman Lyashenko.

Malhotra, 21, has seven goals and six assists in 56 games with New York this season.

"He brings size, speed and a competitive nature that is very important at this time of year,'' Dallas GM Doug Armstrong said. "He was the key to the trade for the Dallas Stars.''

Yet Malhotra never fulfilled the potential the Rangers believed he had, and failed to prove himself most recently after receiving more ice time when captain Mark Messier was lost for the season with a shoulder injury.

Malhotra, 6-foot-2 and 215 pounds, was the seventh overall pick by the Rangers in the 1998 draft. He's expected to join the Stars Wednesday in Montreal.

"With a new opportunity like this I think he can come in and play well and the system will help him out here,'' Dallas right wing John MacLean said. MacLean played with the Rangers from 1998 to February 2001.

Rucinsky, who turned 31 on Monday, had an assist in Dallas' 5-2 victory in Washington on Tuesday night. He was traded to Dallas from Montreal in November and has eight goals and 17 assists in 59 games.

"I think at different times during the year he didn't feel comfortable with our group,'' Armstrong said. "It allows us to get a good player back in return who still has untapped potential in Manny Malhotra.''

Rucinsky, who becomes an unrestricted free agent this summer, won a gold medal with the Czech Republic in the 1998 Olympics.

Heisten was sent to Houston of the AHL. He played in 10 games with the Rangers at the beginning of the season, but didn't score.

He played 49 games this season for Hartford, the Rangers' AHL franchise, scoring nine goals and collecting nine assists.

Lyashenko was recalled from Utah of the AHL earlier in the day after Dallas waived right wing Rob DiMaio.

Lyashenko has appeared in 58 games with Utah this season, recording 11 goals and 25 assists. He has played in four games with Dallas this season, with no goals.

Great Move. its great to see that the reason why the Rangers didnt get Bure a couple of years back was because the Rangers didnt want to include Malhotra. They never give the guy a fair shot and now they trade him for Martin Rucinsky and his big 8 Goals!!! And then they throw in Barret Heisten too?? This trade sucks.

When I heard Rangers acquire Rucinsky, I thought big deal, what crappy player did they give up. And then I find out that this is what they gave up. Im not happy at all about this trade. If your going to trade Malhotra, bring back somebody who at least has Double Digit Goals for Gods Sake!!!

FUCK!!! Well, so much for Manny being the future of the Rangers. Theyve only wasted the last few years building him up.

I think its time to put Sather and Layden in a padded room together and get rid of all the oxygen in there, letting them die slow and painful deaths.

This was a bad deal for the Rangers. Year after year the Rangers trade for now instead of the future and year after year they fail miseralbly. They need to stop looking at what they can do this year and focus on building a team that will stand the test of time.

For the Stars it's a good deal, it makes them stronger and younger. They are dumping salaries and looking to rebuild. They are realizing they have made some bad deals this year and are looking to correct them. With these moves they may still have a shot at making the playoffs.

This really does suck. Wasn't Malholtra fodder for a possible P. Bure deal a few years ago? And look what we get back now. Who knows maybe this is part of something bigger.
Sather Sucks. Low Blows.

Someone told me once that there's a right and wrong, and that punishment would come to those who dare to cross the line. But it must not be true for jerk-offs like you. Maybe it takes longer to catch a total asshole. But I'm tired of waiting. Maybe it's just bullshit and I should play GOD, and shoot you myself. MJK

The Stars are going to make the playoffs unless they play terrible down the stretch. They have a 4 point lead on Edmonton with 2 games in hand. And 6 point lead on Calgary and Vancouver with 1 game in hand. They will be in, and Malhotra will get to play playoff hockey.

I wouldnt mind giving up Malhotra if they got back a big time scorer, or a big time defensive player. They should have went for Derian Hatcher.

So they didnt help themselves defensively at all, and they got 2 guys who arent snipers either. And to add insult to injury, Rucinsky is a Free Agent, so he could be gone after playing less than 20 games in a Rangers sweater.

This trade is awful.

I already commented in the official rangers thread, but FB you summed it up. Why do you give up a 21yr old for a mediocre 31yr old who will be a Free Agent in 2 mos?

This was exactly what I was worried about. Dolan must have given the directive to make the playoffs at all cost, and they are gambling that Rucinsky will jump start Nedved & Dvorak.

I can't believe Malholtra's value is this low, and if it is they would have been better off keeping him as a 3rd or 4th line center.

Funniest part was last night at the Garden the Rangers staff announced Manny Malhotra as a scratch. A scratch!?!?!? Meanwhile there's Martin Rucinsky, on the ice warming up. Stupid. He did have an assist on Barnaby's goal last night. He made an awesome pass. I knew right as he touched it that it was going in.

Still a bad move but anything can happen.

Sidenote: Why do the fans boo Nedved so much? I've never heard a player get boo-ed by his own fans that badly!

he isn't doing anything, I cant remember the last time he scored a big goal. He's now the whipping boy for a season going downhill fast. The Malhotra trade is not a big deal. Rucinsky played well last night. On a side note I cant stand ranger fans who are turning on Lindros (Joe Beningno on the fan). If he could play he would, hes come back from 7 concussions if he didnt have a passion for the game he could've quit long ago. He's obviously making sure hes completely healed for bigger games down the stretch.

It doesn't get much bigger than the games they have been playing. His foot isnt broken, its bruised, get out there and play. Im playing Hockey next Sunday and if my foot is bruised, Im going to play, and I dont make 7 million a year to play in games that are crucial to my team making the playoffs.

If it was Messier he would play with 1 foot.

You dont know what kind of pain he's in. Maybe they're not even announcing the full extent of the problem. this is a guy whos putting his health on the line everytime he goes out there. One hit could give him severe damage and still plays. people were saying he should have retired a while ago and that hes stupid for playing with so many concussions. He's no coward. these are big games but they're not the biggest.

Your right, they are not the biggest. But if he keeps sitting out, they arent going to be playing when the "Biggest" games are played for the 5th straight year.

Point is the Rangers are still fighting for a playoff spot. Even though it looks like they have a good shot at making it in, If Lindros were any kind of player that cared enough abut his team he would be playing. Pain or no pain. Leetch has played with a fractured foot, players play in pain all the time. Bottom line is the team needs him right now and he's not there for them. How effective would it be for him to rest up for the playoffs if there are no playoffs for the Rangers? Lindros has a history of letting teams down when they need him most. From the Rangers to the Flyers, the Nordiques(Colorado) all the way to the Sault Ste Marie team back in his younger years. Yes he's an excellent player, when he plays. But I have no respect for his lack of "work ethic"

As for the boo-ing of Nedved, that is just ridiculous. He's still a Ranger and as long as he wears their colors I will support him. The same with Lindros, I may not like him, I may not respect him but as long as he wears that jersey he's a part of my team and I will root for him (whenever he actually plays that is)

I dont recall that.

Maybe your thinking of Richter. I said that they wont trade him.

If you think I said that, then go find it and bring it up.
