If the Rangers go out this off-season and try to get a forward, Ranger fans need not show up at the Garden this year. Because they aint making the playoffs then either. It's useless scoring 3 or 4 goals a game when your defense gives up 5 or 6. Rangers needed defense. What did they do? They got Bure and Poti. Way to address your glaring needs. They need Hitchcock to whip their ass into shape.

"That's the coach's job - motivate players, and install system to get most out of them. Low may have been a good guy, but that doesn't get it done."

But the players have to do something about it also. If they see that a system isn't working and are desperate, one of the leaders should have stood up and said something. Talk to the coach about changing something. Look at the Isles. After a real bad loss to some team I can't think of now, Peca called a players only meeting and reemed them out. He took charge and they finished strong. Someone should have done that for the Rangers. Lindros, Fluery, Leetch, Richter...someone should have taken charge. Nobody did. It seemed that they gave up when they had a chance, and they played great when it was officially over for them.

Update on misc rumors re: Sather's search for new coach.

1) Sather seems intent on sticking to HIS schedule, and interviewing all of his candidates.
He has said he feels no pressure to quicken his search, even though Flyers need new coach and will definitely be interested in Ken Hitchcock.

2) Sather is using the interview process to get ideas as to what is wrong / what can be done with Rangers.

3) Sather has told players he could care less what they think about a coach. Supposedly Lindros was said to be against Hitchcock, and Sather told him to just worry about playing, not coaching.

4) Devils finally gave permission to interview Larry Robinson, who is definitely interested.
NY Post Larry Brooks pushing this one.

5) Rangers may well be looking at young coaches/new ideas. AP reports (so it must be true ;) that Sather is about to ask for permission to interview LA Kings assistant Dave Tippett (who was responsible for their special teams), and also wants to interview Canadiens assistant Guy Carbonneau and Avalanche assistant Bryan Trottier , as well as Pat Burns, another Flyer candidate.

Larry Robinson would suit me fine
:-D

Ted Nolan would suit me fine.

Bryan Trottier certainly would not. What would they have Potvin and Bossy as his assistants?

Low simply didn't get the job done this season. That's why he got the ax. As for a replacement, Ted Nolan would be my top choice. Messier could become the coach, but he has no experience.

Well, Fat Boy on WFAN thinks Nolan will get good shot.
I'm still skeptical of his being hired, considering Nolan/Muckler and Muckler/Sather.

I'll be happy with Nolan, but I still think Robinson could do wonders with D-corp, and Robinson would have respect of all players.

In any case, this is a most critical hiring.
Sather seems to be reshaping team, and Rangers can't afford another Low.

I don't know who Sather will hire but I wont have faith in whoever he brings in. Sather has yet to prove anything to ranger fans. his biggest moves were getting big names which goes against everything he did in edmonton. He drafted Blackburn so I give him credit for that but I have no faith in him yet.

Actually Sather's biggest moves were getting rid of Neil Smith's players.

They did major makeover of Hartford, and moved out Smith young players for his own. We haven't seen the results with the big club, but it seems to me he was trying to buy time until some of the youth progresses. Remember how bad it was in last days of Smith - there wasn't even hope.

Maybe I'm giving him too much credit, but we'll see. He was right about Lindros playing (virtually) the whole season and Jagr didn't give the Capitals the lift most everyone expected.

Even though he wasted money on Ulanov he was able to trade him off, something I thought was impossible.

Again, this coach hiring will probably determine Sather's legacy with NYR

Well, right now it looks like Herb Brooks part Deux.

Sather had long interview, and seems to think you can still play free wheeling style and win.
Looks like Richter (or Blackburn) will continue to see 40+ shots a night

Other Candidates:
Robinson - said no, wants to take a year off.

Hitchcock - possibly with Flyers; supposedly doesn't think he'll mesh well with Big Names on Rangers (Lindros, Bure, etc.). Rumors abound that his negativity outweighs this knowledge on a veteran team.

Pat Burns - The fact that Sather's good buddy in Boston had such negative things to say led to only a phone interview.

Ted Nolan - No one seems to think he ever had a chance.

Tippets, Trottier, etc. - current thought is Sather wants to go with experience unless one of these guys really impress him. (I was going to say "WOW" him, but somehow that didn't seem like a good idea ;) )
