2002 NBA PLAYOFF PREDICTIONS

EASTERN CONFERENCE QUARTERFINALS

#1 New Jersey Nets vs. #8 Indiana Pacers
Interesting here how the Nets are the #1 seed with virtually no playoff experience, while the Pacers are the #8 seed with tons of playoff experience. The Pacers snuck in at the end and will come into this series with nothing to lose. This is similar to the situation they were in last year when they were as well the #8 seed and they won the first game in Philadelphia before losing the next 3. Expect some nerves in New Jersey for the first game, but if they can get past that game they will be fine. Game 1 is the key here, if the Pacers capitalize on that, they can make a series out of it, if not it can be a quick one. I wouldnt be shocked if the Pacers took a game in New Jersey, but I think once having a couple of games under their belt and then heading on the road, the Nets will be fine and they will move on.
PREDICTION: Nets in 4

#2 Detroit Pistons vs. #7 Toronto Raptors
The Raptors are a very hard team to figure out. They were crusing in right in the middle of the pack in the East and then they lose 16 out of 17 games and were basically done. Then they end the season on a rampage without Vince Carter and now they have got themselves into the playoffs. The Pistons are another surprise team this year with not alot of playoff experience. The Raptors are hot and should be tough in this series, but I dont think they can overcome the Pistons without Vince Carter in this series.
PREDICTION: Pistons in 4

#3 Boston Celtics vs. #6 Philadelphia 76ers
This should be a very good series with a very good matchup of big time players with Iverson for the Sixers and Pierce for the Celtics. The Sixers are the defending Eastern Conference Champions, but have had a dull season this year and have slipped down to the #6 series. I think the Celtics are up to the challenge of this series, and with Iverson not at 100% and with the home court advantage, Ill take the Celtics to edge out the Sixers in what will be a very good matchup.
PREDICTION: Celtics in 5

#4 Charlotte Hornets vs. #5 Orlando Magic
The Magic fell at home to the Heat in the last game and have lost home court advantage because of it. Regardless of the Home Court though, I think the Magic will get by the Hornets here. The Hornets have done a nice job getting by in the East this year, without anything resembling a home court presence. Its going to be tough though to survive like that come playoff time. Orlando should take 1 of the first 2 in Charlotte, maybe even both, and the Magic should close them out when they head back home.
PREDICTION: Magic in 4

WESTERN CONFERENCE QUARTERFINALS

#1 Sacramento Kings vs. #8 Utah Jazz
The Kings are a much better team than the Jazz but the Kings cant take this veteran Jazz team for granted. They have been here before and they have nothing to lose. If the Jazz can take a game in Sacramento, things could get very interesting here. I think the Jazz will be competitive in the games in Sacramento, and I expect the Jazz to win a game in this series. This one could even go the distance, I wouldnt be surprised, but Ill take the Kings to win it in Utah.
PREDICTION: Kings in 4

#2 San Antonio Spurs vs. #7 Seattle Supersonics
The Spurs have been unstoppable the past 2 months of the season, and made up a considerable margin to win the Midwest Division. This series to me is the most lobsided one. This series has the best chance to be a sweep. Nobody on Seattle is going to stop Duncan and Robinson. Spurs should have little trouble here and I would be surprised if Seattle even takes a game.
PREDICTION: Spurs in 3

#3 Los Angeles Lakers vs. #6 Portland Trailblazers
Tough break for the Blazers. They get the #6 seed, but they are playing the one team you dont want to play. They got stuck with the Lakers last year and they are stuck with them again. The Blazers went on a great roll a couple of months ago, but besides that roll, the Blazers havent been that stellar of a team. Its playoff time and the Lakers will turn it up, and this one should be a sweep as well.
PREDICTION: Lakers in 3

#4 Dallas Mavericks vs. #5 Minnesota Timberwolves
This is going to be a very competitive series and should be the most exciting of the first Round series'. The Wolves have never won a playoff series and they always seem to wind up with bad matchups. But The Wolves caught a break with the Spurs winning the Division. The Mavericks are a better matchup for the Wolves than the Spurs would have been. The Mavericks havent played great down the stretch and they are by no means unbeatable. I think the time has come for Kevin Garnett to play a big time series. I think he outplays Nowitzki and the T-Wolves move on for the first time in their history.
PREDICTION: Timberwolves in 4

Solid, very solid. Can't really argue with your points. Very nice job. However, I was surprised by some of your predictions.

I don't think the Nets have enough experience to go all the way to the Finals. They are a very talented team, but experience goes a long way. They may not be prepared, physically or mentally, for a long series.

I was also surprised that you picked the Kings over the Lakers. The Lakers have the ability to turn it up that extra notch when they have to.

I would watch out for the winner of the Dallas/Minnesota series. They will surprise a lot of people by going deep into the playoffs.

I predict that a bunch of tall black guys will bounce a big orange ball around on a wood floor, all the while thinking about their mansions, yachts, and cars...

Normally I would agree with you, but look at the other teams in the East. The next 2 teams the Pistons and Celtics have just as little experience as the Nets do.

The Nets can handle the Hornets or Magic in the 2nd Round. And The Sixers are banged up and have never got things going all year. I dont think they can just turn it on right now and head to the Finals.

So was I. But I give an assist here to the Spurs. I think the Spurs are playing great basketball right now and have alot to prove after their embarrasing performance against the Lakers this year. I dont think they will beat the Lakers but I think they will play a very hard draining 7 game series with them. And then the Lakers will have something taken out of them when they head to play the Kings, I think the Kings can take advantage of that.

But I certainly would not be shocked to say the least if the Lakers just breeze through anyway.

No arguement there. But you also have to realize that the Nets are under a pretty good amount of pressure to go far, considering the season they've had. It seems all the focus has been on the Nets and their turn-around season. However, the pressure of playing in the regular season is nothing compared to the playoffs. Nobody knows how they will react. Will they step up or will they fold? We won't find out until the games start.

It would be great to see the Nets go far and even take it all, but like you said, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Lakers turn it up and rip through everyone.

I have a question, and I was hoping someone could answer this with some proof, as my friend and I have been arguing about it all day.

The Spurs are the number two seed, and the Lakers are the number three seed. If they both make it to the second round who will have the homecourt advantage. My friend is saying that becasue the Lakers have a better record they will have Home court? I am saying that SA will have it because they are the number two seed.

Lakers will have the home court advantage if they play the Spurs. LA won 3 out of 4 games against the Spurs this year. With the same record, that would give LA the home court advantage. The reason the Spurs are in second is because they won their division. The top two teams from each division automatically get placed 1-2 in the playoffs.

At least that's what ESPN says. :-D

Then my question is what it is the advantage of winning your division to be ranked second if you do not carry that advantage against a team that is ranked lower in the next round??

The advantage is you get to be the #2 seed in the First Round instead of the #3.

You get to play Seattle instead of Portland which is a much easier matchup.

Want another example? Look at hockey. The Carolina Hurricanes are the number 3 seed in the East. They are playing the Devils, the number 6 seed. The Devils have 4 more points (95-91) and more wins (41-35). Yet Carolina is ranked higher because they won their division, which automatically places them in the top 3 teams.

It's a stupid fucking system. I say make two divisions within each conference. The playoffs are based on points, so its possible that one division may have almost all of the teams in the playoffs, while the other division has 1 or 2.

East Round 1:

Orlando 3, Charlotte 1
Detroit 3, Toronto 2
Philadelphia 3, Boston 1

West Round 1:
Sacramento 3, Utah 2
Dallas 3, Minnesota 2

Conference Finals:

More of who I'd like to see win than who I think will win, I suppose..Sacramento is one of the very few teams in the league that's actually worth rooting for. Whoever comes out of the West, though, will be NBA champions. The East's top 4 teams is just so much weaker (and inexperienced) than the West's best 4.

2002 NBA PLAYOFFS 2ND ROUND PREDICTIONS

EASTERN CONFERENCE

#1 New Jersey Nets vs. #4 Charlotte Hornets
This looks to be the makings of a very competitve and exciting series. The Nets got a huge weight off their shoulders by ousting the Pacers in that classic Double Overtime Game 5. Expect to see a more loose bunch of Nets for this 2nd round series against the Hornets. The Hornets were very impressive in their series against Orlando, where as they did all year long, they were dominant on the road winning both games in Orlando. As the playoffs continue, the lack of a true home court advantage is going to catch up to the Hornets. They play very well on the road, and thats what has gotten them this far. But it will get more difficult to win on the road as you get deeper into the playoffs playing against the elite teams in the NBA. The Hornets need to come out and take advantage of what might be a tired Nets team in Game 1. That is the key game for the Hornets, if the Nets can take Game 1, they are going to be in good shape. I see this being a very long series. And I see a majority of the games in this series being won by the road team. I see this going to a 7th game, and in that 7th game thats when the Home Court means the most, and I see the Nets escaping from another hard fought series that goes the limit.
PREDICTION: Nets in 7

#2 Detroit Pistons vs. #3 Boston Celtics
Not to many people would have believed that Nets vs. Hornets would be an Eastern Conference Semi-Final series back before the season started. Well nobody would have believed that Pistons vs. Celtics would be the other. Both teams are coming off series' where the Home team won every game. The Pistons were looking dominant early on in their series vs. Toronto but struggled up in Canada. While the Celtics looked really good against a very tough Philadelphia team by pummeling them in Game 5, after 2 tough losses in Philadelphia. I originally was going with Detroit in this series, but after seeing the Pistons have to struggle against a much weaker Toronto team, and then seeing Boston take it to a much better Philadelphia team. I have to go with Boston here. Pierece should out play Stackhouse and the Celtics seem destined for a long playoff run.
PREDICTION: Celtics in 6

WESTERN CONFERENCE

#1 Sacramento Kings vs. #4 Dallas Mavericks
This has exciting series written all over it. Expect lots of points in this series as both teams score plenty of points and play little defense. Not your typical playoff style basketball. The Mavericks were very impressive in sweeping a tough Timberwolves team, while the Kings struggled with the Jazz, but got the job done by winning both games in Utah. Its going to be tough for Dallas to win this series considering Sacramento's dominant home court record. If Dallas loses just 1 of their 3 home games in the series, that means they will have to win twice in Sacramento. Which is a tall order. I can see them getting 1 game in Sacramento, but not 2. And Sacramento should find a way to get 1 win in Dallas. But dont be surprised if the Home team wins every game in this series. This will be a f un exciting series to watch with many star players spread throughout the court, but the Home court advantage of Sacramento should propel them to the Western Conference Finals.
PREDICTION: Kings in 7

#2 Los Angeles Lakers vs. #3 San Antonio Spurs
Well this is the Spurs' chance to show what they are made of. Its a rematch a year in the making that the Spurs have been waiting for after they were thoroughly embarrased by the Lakers in last year's Western Conference Finals. The Lakers continued their dominant playoff run by sweeping Portland and nobody has shown any reason why the Lakers shouldnt repeat as Champs again. This is the series that should tell whether the Lakers will be challenged, or will breeze to another NBA Title. If the Spurs fold like last year, and the Lakers cake walk, well then start sizing them for rings again. If the Spurs put up a fight and give the Lakers a run, then even if the Lakers get by the Spurs, they may have something taken out of them in their matchup in the West Finals. I expect a much better Spurs peformance this year than last year, but thats not saying much. But with Robinson not 100%, I dont see the Spurs giving them the fight, I originally thought. It looks like this series may not be as good as it could have been.

2002 NBA EASTERN CONFERENCE FINALS

#1 New Jersey Nets vs. #3 Boston Celtics
Well just about nobody would have predicted this as the Eastern Conference Finals before the season started. The Celtics a franchise that has done absolutely nothing in over a decade, and the Nets a franchise that has done absolutley nothing for its entire existance. But now one of these teams is heading to the NBA Finals, and this should be a great series. The key in this series is going to maintaining Home Court Advantage, both of these teams have been great at home in these playoffs. The two teams are a combined 10-1 at home. The first team to win on the road will have a distinct advantage in this series. The Celtics need to get one of the first 2 in New Jersey, or they will be in trouble. And if the series is 1-1 going back to Boston, then the Nets will be in a situation where they need to take a game in Boston. Both teams are playing very good basketball right now and this should be a toss up series. But right now I am liking the Celtics. The Celtics seem to be hitting on all cylinders right now and I think they can win this series, but this series is almost like a flip of a coin, either team could pull through.
PREDICTION: Celtics in 6

2002 NBA WESTERN CONFERENCE FINALS

#1 Sacramento Kings vs. #3 Los Angeles Lakers
Are the Lakers unbeatable? Unfortunately the answer to that question is yes. The Spurs couldnt touch the Lakers and therefore I dont see how the Kings are going to do it, especially without Peja Stoyacovich. You can just forget about it, nobody is beating the Lakers, and especially not the Kings. I thought earlier the Kings could beat them, but that was only if the Lakers were exhausted and highly tested by the Spurs which they werent. The Kings are a great home team and hold on to a Home Court Advantage, but come on, if the Utah Jazz can win a Playoff game in Sacramento, then I think the Lakers can do it. At best the Kings can make this a series, but I would be very surprised if they won it.

I know the league wants Lakers vs Celtics to get the ratings up, so it will probably be those 2 teams (cause we all know that the NBA is rigged). However, the better teams are the Nets and the Kings. We shall see what happens.
