Actually the Rangers did do almost the same thing the Isles did... Holik = Peca (Both are great 2-way players) Osgood = Richter (Both are great goalies) and then the Isles had a problem with scoring so they got Yashin, and the Rangers had a problem on Defense so they got Kasparitis. Not much difference there huh?

Like I said before, the Rangers still need to add more to their defense instead of concentrating on Amonte who had a second-line-like season last year.

And I swear I don't have a gun...

Wow, let's give up a draft pick, just to get back the same shitty goalie
quote:

then have to give up basically the same pick for re-signing him. It's more or less a wash

Make up your mind :-D
quote:

it's stupid that they got rid of him in the first place

No, what they did was take advantage of the rules. If they didn't trade him and didn't re-sign him, they'd get nothing because of their payroll. By trading him they would have gotten a pick from Oilers (if they didn't sign him), who would have gotten a pick from the league. That is why others were traded just before deadline (like Fleury & Joseph).

the Isles stole the offseason with trades

That has yet to be seen. I don't think Isles trades were big net gain or loss, but time will tell.

quote:

And wow, the Rangers defense is really strong now. You have one defensive defenseman

Well, the forward they signed (Holik) wasn't signed for scoring. They know they needed to upgrade defense, and by letting go of an "offensive" defenseman (Berard) and replacing him with a "defensive/nasty" defenseman, they show the way they want to go.

How long till 1st Isles/Rangers game? it looks like you can't wait. ;)

2002 Crack Committee Objectives: (modified version)(You gotta try and believe....)
1.Hate the Braves with PASSION and extreme prejudice
1a. Try and go a week without having to punch a wall in frustration after watching the Mets play
2. 90 Wins and somehow get the Mets into playoffs this year
3. All 5 Starters have winning records this year
3a.Have team understand it is OK to get a hit with runners on base.
4. Mets win World Series (after divine intervention)

Well hopefully Mr. Trottier will give Kloucek a chance to play, and not bench him after every mistake he makes, like that idiot Low did.

Well at least Berard is gone. Unfortunatley they will probably have to live with Karpa for another year because of his ridiculous contract. Same thing with Lefebvre.

Their defense is still poor, but their offense should still be one of the tops in the leagues, and adding Holik, Kasparaitis, and Oliwa, will give this team the added toughness they need so they dont get bullied around like they always do.

Ok, although I am one of the resident die hard flyers fans in these parts, I honestly am not playing the sour grapes card, or trying to burst bubbles, but..... how old is the Rangers defense now? Kasparitis is a classic case of a guy you hate...until he is on your team, but I honestly don't see how his addition makes the Rangers a better team?

As far as Richter goes, it's a bittersweet kinda thing for me. Part of me seriously wanted to see him return home and help to stabilize a team that is cuffering from a serious case of underachievementitis, but at the same time I think back to the signing of Beezer several years ago, and 2 years too late and am happy I don't have to relive that.

I was referring to last season, and obviously it worked, cuz they finished one point out of the division lead and made the playoffs.

Are you insane??? Do I have to go dig up my comparison of the two that I did earlier this year? No chance dude. Not even close! Ozzie is twice the goalie Richter is and he's a lot younger.

You keep thinking that. Not only is Osgood not twice as good as Richter, HES NOT BETTER! Case Closed, but we will never agree with this, but you go ask NHL Executives and NHL Personell who the better goalie is and the majority will go with the guy named Richter.

And dont give me the Osgood has 2 Cups nonsense, he sat on the bench for 1 of them, and for the vast majority of this career has been playing for better teams than Richter has, so dont bring up your numbers.

And you want to look at numbers, lets look at games. and Big Times games and series. Look at their track records in the playoffs. Besides winning the Cup in 98, against a Washington team that was severely outmatched like Carolina was this year by the way, What has Chris Osgood done in big time playoff games. Lets see?

Well in 1995, in the Finals with his franchise having a 40 year drought in between Stanley Cups, he was terrible in getting not only beat, but swept by a weaker Devils team, and vastly outplayed by Martin Brodeur.

Meanwhile Richter, with a 54 year drought in between Stanley Cups for his franchise, managed to outplay Kirk McLean who stood on his head in that series, especially in Game 1, and was the only reason, besides maybe spirited play from Trevor Linden and Pavel Bure, why that series even went 7 games, in actuality the Rangers should have won that series in 5 games, possibly 4.

Then Osgood plays for the Wings in 96 who finish with over 60 wins, and the Best Regular Season Record in NHL history, but Osgood is outplayed by Roy in the West Finals, and it is the Avalanche who hoist the Cup that year.

Now in 97, The Wings are fed up with Osgood, he cant win the big game or series, so they bring in Mike Vernon, initially to be the backup. But Vernon is so good he outplays Osgood down the stretch, becomes their Playoff goalie, and what do you know? their curse is lifted and they dominate the Flyers in the Finals to win the Cup.
Mike Vernon is named Con Smythe winner.

Then in 98 Osgood wins his Cup. He gets credit for that no doubt, but if the Avalanche werent upset by the Oilers in the First Round that year, he probably would have been beat by Roy again in the Big Series.

And what do you know Osgood gets killed by Colorado in 99 and 2000, cant even get them past Los Angeles in 2001, and gets traded and nobody in Detroit was sad to see him go. They replace him with hasek they win the Cup.

Osgood goes to the Islanders, does a good job getting them to the playoffs, but what happens, they lose in the 1st Round. Not his fault they lost the series, although when the spotlight is on in Game 7, "The Big Game" Osgood had his worst game of the series, and Curtis Joseph outplayed him.

Now of course Richter hasnt been to the playoffs in 5 years, Im just going by the big game philosophy. When Richter is there you know you can depend on him. 1996 he wins the World Cup for the USA, and this past year almost led the US to the Gold Medal, and might have won it too, if Canada didnt have a virtual bye into the Gold Medal game having to play Belarus.

More Mike Richter playoff accomplishments, led an 8th seeded team to a win in the 1st Round of the Playoffs, led a team that had no business going to the East Finals in 97, to the East Finals, and outplaying Brodeur in the 2nd Round.

Now I ask you. Big Game who do you want in nets? Chris Osgood or Mike Richter?

And I am implure you non partial fans out there with no legiances to either the Rangers or Islanders, to tell me who's the better goaltender, if there are any of you out there.

Well said FB! Also, when have you seen Mike Richter let in goals from the Centre Ice line during the playoffs?? Al McInnis has a hard slapshot but come on, the goalies have pads 5 inches thick! Talk about choking in the big one there... It's too bad Mike Richter is being over-shadowed in an era full of ego-maniacs like Curtis Joseph, Patrick Roy, and Dominik Hasek who get huge money and go off to the best team. If Richter wanted a cup he could've gone to a playoff team or one better than New York...
