BOSTON (AP) - The New York Yankees acquired outfielder Raul Mondesi from the Toronto Blue Jays for a minor league pitcher Monday night, hoping the slumping slugger can give them production in a position that's been lagging this season.

The AL East-leading Yankees, already topping the majors in homers and runs scored, have failed to find a replacement for the retired right fielder Paul O'Neill.

Shane Spencer and John Vander Wal have not hit as well as expected while playing in right, and Rondell White has not done as well as anticipated in left.

Mondesi, 31, has hit at least 24 home runs in seven straight years. He has 15 homers and 45 RBIs this season, but is batting only .224.

Mondesi is a strong defensive player, known for an exceptional arm. Last week, he criticized new Blue Jays manager Carlos Tosca after being benched.

``Our outfield has been depleted and when Joe (manager Torre) needs something, I'm going to do everything I can to get it for him,'' Yankees owner George Steinbrenner said. ``And the way our fans are supporting us day after day, I've got to step forward for them, too.''
Steinbrenner threw a fit for having a bad right fielder playing vs. the Mets, it's no surprise for this to happen.

And even though he's slumping, several ballplayers that have been brought over the past few years have had great second halves to their seasons.

People have cast aside many players to come over from other teams (Ventura the most recent to come to mind), only to see those players perform great as Yankees.

Mondesi's only batting .224, but he does have presence and nice power numbers.

I'm not thrilled about the Mondesi deal. I know we didn't give up anything important to get him so it won't really hurt us at all. But I don't think he's gonna jump start us and help all that much. I would of rather waited to see if we could get Floyd and if we couldn't, hey we have been playing great so far with this outfield, what worse things could happen...

I LOVE the deal for a couple reasons:

1. I didn't wan't floyd. We'd have to give up
atleast one of NJ and Lilly, and probably juan
rivera or thames. In return we would have
gotten a slumping, below-average fielder.

2. mondesi gives the yankees a defensive
presence that they missed from oneill - this
guy has the best outfield arm in the majors.
Floyd's arm is as bad as white and bernies.

3. We gave up nothing, and toronto picks up
half his salary this year and next. floyd would
be a high-priced free agent.

Will wonders never cease; I actually agree with John Slack ;)

Mondesi represents low risk / high reward. He has shown in past he can be a great player, and not much was given up.

Interesting, today I heard on Michael Kay's show that he thought Torre played Wilson in right field intentionally to show that he thought they needed an outfielder; after all, it wouldn't have been terrible if Vanderwall hit vs. Leiter. If that is the case, Torre is even better at Yankee job than I thought.

2002 Crack Committee Objectives: (modified version)(You gotta try and believe....)
1.Hate the Braves with PASSION and extreme prejudice
1a. Try and go a week without having to punch a wall in frustration after watching the Mets play
2. 90 Wins and somehow get the Mets into playoffs this year
3. All 5 Starters have winning records this year
3a.Have team understand it is OK to get a hit with runners on base.
4. Mets win World Series (after divine intervention)

If you guys gave up ANYTHING good at all, this would be a dumb trade. But you didn't so it's not. There's a reason you got him for a nobody and they're paying half his salary. He was a bust in LA. A bust in Toronto. What makes you think he won't be a bust in the biggest spotlight of them all?

But, like you said, you gave up nothing, so yeah, why not. Maybe you get lucky. Knowing my luck, he'll finally reach his potential here and win the MVP.

2002 Crack Committee Objectives:
1. 94 Wins and the NL East title
2. Hate the Braves with a passion.
3. All 5 Starters have winning records this year
4. Mets win the World Series

Good things happen to those who come to the Yankees. A change of scenery where he does not have to be the man and can just fade onscurely into the lineup will do him a world of good.

Exhibit A: Robin Ventura. Remember him Mets fans. Yankees fans appreciate your generosity.

If only Shea Stadium was a park in which you'd be able to sneeze and get a homer if you were a lefty, Ventura would've still been productive the last two years and still be a Met. Likewise, even if he still hit the ball the way he's been as a Yankee and played in Shea, he'd suck. look at his numbers. If it weren't for the short porch, he'd be having a terible year, and combined with his play at defense, Yankee fans would want Henson called up NOW. Change of scenery my ass, TW. change of ballpark is more like it.

Hell, if the Mets played in Yankee Stadium, Vaughn and Burnitz would be having good years. Piazza would also be having a better year, too, with his propensity to go the other way. Damn that fat fuck Babe Ruth and damn his wall.

Seriously, when the Mets build their new park in the year 2056, they better have a short fucking porch in right field.

FUN FACT OF THE DAY: Raul Mondesi is NOT left handed, so there is a slight chance he might still fuck up! Nah. Not a chance. Like I said, God is a Yankee fan. If that isn't a good reason to practice Satanism, I don't know what is.

.... Everyone needs to get off Joe Torre's dick .... He obviously is a decent manager because he won 4 world series in the last six years or whatever .... but he is far from the greatest .... the yankees haven't had the highest payroll in baseball for the last five years fpr nothing .... it's not like he intentionally put someone in the lineup to show there is a weak spot because he wouldve been doing that since the beginning of his yankee career ....

I watched just about every at bat Ventura had at Shea Stadium the past 2 years. And they could have been playing in a Little League Field, it wouldnt have mattered. Ventura would have not done nothing. It doesnt matter that the fences are in when EVERY at bat he had was either a Strikeout or Ground out to 2nd.

The Magic of the Pinstripes is why Ventura has suddenly found his game. I can assure you if he was still a Met now, he would have the same shitty numbers he had the past 2 years, and the same shitty numbers that basically all the Mets have right now.

How about Dave Justic? Guy had spousal abuse cases against him, the reputation of beating his Girlfriends. Also of being a selfish player. How did that turn out? Oh yeah, Justice basically got us into the World Series in 2000.

This is just plain stupid. I love the assholes
like you who say things like "i'd like to see him
win with the royals" of course he wouldn't you
dumb fuck. No manager would. Its all about
being able to get great players over the hump.
Its the difference from being red aurbach or
marv levy. Name one coach/manager that has
led a team to a championship with an awful
team- you can't.

.... Shut up, dick! .... I never said he should try to win with the royals but don't call him the greatest manager when he does it with the highest payroll .... obviously, everyone knows the yankees have signed the best free agent for the last few years or traded for some stud .... thats like saying phil jackson is the greatest manager ever when he had the best player in history for six of his titles and then has 2 of the 3 or 4 best players to win his last three .... eat a dick!!

The core of the team is all home grown talent!! Jeter, Rivera, Pettite, Posada, Bernie. There is NO WAY the yanks win the way they do without players like this. They grow em in the farm system and pay em to stick around. Nothing wrong with that, thats the way its supposed to happen. Most teams can't afford to do it so the Dynasty shall continue on!!!! Getting new players like Giambi and Mondesi is a result of good business!!

.... If you notice the only ones who say baseball is a business are the ones who have the money .... and have only been calling it that since the late 70's/ early 80's .... this is why in about 5-10 yrs baseball has gone to complete shit and will continue to do so .... I hope that fans end up not being able to afford to go to games or just get tired of watching millionaires bitch .... I hope to see baseball in the shitter before I die .... It used to be my favorite sport but I am just getting sick of all this shit ....

i do agree that baseball is going to shit, but there is no need to criticize the Yankees for it. The Yankees have just done everything better. The Yanks are the most famous sports franchise and they are drawing more fans then anyone right now except Seattle. If you make the money, why not put the best product you can out on the field everyday?

Come on, you're using the Yanks as a scapegoat. They are just doing what they are supposed to do as a franchise. It's a problem that has infected all of baseball. Why did the Rangers pay A-Rod all that money? Because they can, why is Boston paying Manny all that money? Because they can. Why are the Yankees paying all this money? Because they can. These are the rights of the owners. THIS IS A PROBLEM WITH BASEBALL AS A WHOLE. Not a problem with the Yankees!!

I am not saying the yankees are the cause of it .... they just represent it better than any other team .... I am a Red Sox fan and agree that they too participate in what I consider is ruining baseball .... It is mostly just six or seven teams in all of baseball .... Yankees, Red Sox, Mets, Dodgers, Rangers, Braves, and maybe another team or two but they are all the ones who buy all the best free agents and are always mentioned when another free agent is coming up .... everyone knows these are all the big-market teams and with free agency, no loyalty among players, and no salary cap in baseball it will continue its downward spiral until it is pretty much done with and the players dont even care .... neither do the owners though

The Curse shall be lifted .... If there isn't a strike!!
