MILWAUKEE -- Major League Baseball will honor Hall of Famer Ted Williams, who died last Friday at age 83, by naming the All-Star MVP Award after him.
The first recipient of the Ted Williams Award will be selected after Tuesday night's game at Miller Park, according to MLB spokesman Matt Gould.

"Ted Williams meant so much to the All-Star Game," Commissioner Bud Selig told USA Today, "it's only fitting to name the MVP Award after him."

Baseball will also pay tribute to Williams during the game with a special ceremony. Williams, the last player to hit .400 in a season, holds the all-time All-Star records for RBIs (12) and walks (11), and single-game All-Star records for hits (4) and home runs (2). In 18 All-Star appearances, he hit .304 with four homers.

Ted Williams:
1918-2002

Williams thrilled fans with many memorable All-Star moments -- and it was a non-playing Midsummer Classic appearance that brought him back to the game. After ending his military service in 1953, Williams did not plan to return to baseball. But he was asked to throw out the first pitch at that year's All-Star Game at Crosley Field in Cincinnati, and the thunderous ovation he received convinced him to change his mind.

An official All-Star Game MVP was not selected until 1962, two seasons after Williams retired. However, he surely would have earned the honor in 1941, when his two-out, three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth off the Cubs' Claude Passeau propelled the American League to a 7-5 victory.

I think that's a good idea. You have to honor your greatest hitter (I think he is the greatest hitter to this date) somehow...

And I swear I don't have a gun...

Nice honor i guess....except the problem i have with it is, he was considered the best hitter of all time last year too. Why didnt they change the name of the award then, or any other year for that matter? It wouldve given Ted a chance to experience something like that while he was still alive. If he had died a week after the all-star game, would they still name the trophy after him? I dont know about that.

Thanks to Austin for the pic

Good point, Cluster F, but better late than never I guess. It actually makes sense that they make the All Star Game award the Ted Williams Award, because two of his greatest moments in his career happened in the All star Game. (You see, back then, it sorta meant something, unlike now) I'm talking about the GW homer and the homer off the un-home-run-hittable "Ethis (or Enos, or whatever the fuck it was called)" pitch.

You are an asshole Velociti. Plain and simple. Maybe if you read the rest of what I typed after that instead of isolating 1 statement and contributing NOTHING except boosting your post count, you wouldve said something a bit more intelligent. But, looking at the majority of your posts, you have the intelligence of a retarded kid staring at a ferris wheel. I HATE you, you STINK!

Actually Selig is having the mad scientist himself John Henry as a guest of honor tonight because of ted Williams death. Got that from ESPN, but that was before the whole cloning the head thing.
