The Montreal Expos and Cincinnati Reds each made deals with the Florida Marlins on Thursday to bolster their postseason chances.
The Expos acquired outfielder Cliff Floyd, infielder Wilton Guerrero and minor league pitcher Claudio Vargas from the Marlins in exchange for reliever Graeme Lloyd, starter Carl Pavano, infielder Mike Mordecai, minor league pitcher Justin Wayne and a player to be named later.

The Reds received starter Ryan Dempster from Florida for outfielder Juan Encarnacion, minor league pitcher Ryan Snare and Guerrero, who was then sent to Montreal in the Floyd deal.

THE TRADE
Expos get:
Cliff Floyd, OF
Wilton Guerrero, INF
Claudio Vargas, P
Reds get:
Ryan Dempster, P
Marlins get:
Juan Encarnacion, OF
Graeme Lloyd, P
Carl Pavano, P
Mike Mordecai, INF
Justin Wayne, P
Ryan Snare, P
Player to be named later

Lloyd told MLB.com Thursday that he has a no-trade clause that includes Florida and that he plans to exercise it.

Floyd, who started his career with Montreal in 1993, is batting .287 with 18 home runs and 57 RBIs. He is the second prominent player acquired by the Expos in the last three weeks, as they dealt with Cleveland for starter Bartolo Colon last month.

The second-place Expos, owned by Major League Baseball, are 10 1/2 games behind Atlanta in the NL East, but remain in contention for a Wild Card berth. They trail Arizona by five games in the Wild Card race.

Cincinnati is two games behind first-place St. Louis in the NL Central.

Dempster, a 25-year-old right-hander, is 5-8 with a 4.79 ERA in 18 starts. He went 15-12 last season and 14-10 in 2000 for the Marlins.

Pavano, 26, was obtained by Montreal from Boston in the Pedro Martinez trade in 1997, but his career has been beset by injuries. He was optioned to Triple-A Ottawa on June 21 after going 3-8 with a 6.30 ERA in 15 games.

Lloyd, a 35-year-old left-hander, is 2-3 with five saves and a 5.87 ERA in 41 relief appearances this season.

Encarnacion, 26, is hitting .277 with 16 homers and 51 RBIs.

The deal reunites Wilton Guerrero with his All-Star brother, Vladimir. They were teammates on the Expos from 1998-2000.
