Tony Amonte reportedly landed with another team Friday, just not the one many were expecting.

The Sports Network of Canada reported that the free-agent winger has signed an undisclosed deal with the Phoenix Coyotes.

Amonte, 31, became an unrestricted free agent on July 1 after failing to negotiate a new contract with the Blackhawks. It was heavily rumored over the past week that Amonte would wind up in New York with either the Islanders or Rangers.

Earlier this year, Amonte said he wanted to stay in Chicago and was reportedly looking for a five-year contract extension that would pay $7 or $8 million a year. The former captain was second on the team in goals (27) last season and finished third in points (67). Amonte joined the Blackhawks after being traded by the Rangers in 1994, and he was Chicago's top goal producer in eight seasons, scoring 268 times in 627 games.

It's official, Amonte has signed with the Coyotes.

quote:

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Free-agent right wing Tony Amonte signed a four-year deal with the Phoenix Coyotes, the team said Friday.

"I'm very excited to be joining the Coyotes,'' Amonte said in a statement released by the team. "They are building a great team and heading in a new direction. I'm proud to be a part of it.''

Last season, he played in all 82 games for the Chicago Blackhawks, recording 27 goals and 39 assists. Amonte, Chicago's team captain for the last two season, also scored six power play goals and four game-winning goals.

In 861 career games in his 13 seasons with the Blackhawks and New York Rangers, Amonte totaled 352 goals and 372 assists. He has scored at least 27 goals and 63 points in each of the last seven seasons.

Amonte, 31, has the NHL's longest-active consecutive game streak at 410, hasn't missed a game since the 1996-1997 season and has missed only two games over the last eight seasons.

Terms of Amonte's deal were not disclosed, but reports have the forward making $24 million over the next four years. Amonte made $4.5 million last season.

"He will fit in very well with the team we are building here,'' said Michael Barnett, the Coyotes' general manager. "His speed on the wing will be a welcome addition to the Coyotes for this upcoming seasons and for years to come.'

This guy wanted to play in the Northeast, yet the Rangers and other teams were only offering as much as 5 million per year. So he goes to Phoenix for 6 million a year.

Is it really worth that extra million to reject going to the place you prefer to play?

That shows that it usually is about money. You would think that there are more important things at that level, but I can only think of a handful of times that a significant free agent didn't go to the team offering the most money.

2002 Crack Committee Objectives: (modified version)(You gotta try and believe....)
1.Hate the Braves with PASSION and extreme prejudice
1a. Try and go a week without having to punch a wall in frustration after watching the Mets play
2. 90 Wins and somehow get the Mets into playoffs this year
3. All 5 Starters have winning records this year
3a.Have team understand it is OK to get a hit with runners on base.
4. Mets win World Series (after divine intervention)
