TAMPA, Fla. – Drew Henson, who would have been a leading Heisman Trophy candidate had he remained at Michigan, signed a $17 million, six-year contract with the New York Yankees on Saturday.

"We worked hard at it and got it done late last night," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said.

Henson will report to the Yankees on Monday. New York is expected to option the quarterback turned third baseman to Triple-A Columbus for the start of the season.

"Drew Henson informed me today that he will leave the University of Michigan to pursue his baseball career. We wish him well," Michigan Lloyd coach Lloyd Carr said in a statement.

The Yankees' offer to play baseball full-time convinced Henson to forgo both his final football season at Michigan and an NFL career.

The Yankees reacquired Henson from Cincinnati on Wednesday, and negotiations on a baseball deal intensified Friday.

The Yankees wanted to sign Henson to a long-term contract, one that would get him through several seasons in which he would be eligible for salary arbitration.

At an average of nearly $3 million annually, it would be a bargain if he turns out to be a star, and a blunder if he never advances past the prospect stage.

Henson, who likely would have been a first-round NFL draft pick in 2002, led Michigan to a 9-3 record and No. 11 ranking last season. Before the trade, he had been planning to return to the Wolverines for his senior season.

New York, which sent Henson to Cincinnati last July in the Denny Neagle trade, reacquired him from the Reds along with outfielder Michael Coleman for outfield prospect Wily Mo Pena.

Henson batted .266 with nine homers in 308 at-bats last season, mostly in Double-A. He struggled after the trade, hitting .172 in 16 games for the Reds' Double-A Chattanooga team

Sounds a lot like Charlie Ward winning the Heisman then turning around and signing with the Knicks

I pray he's the future and not just hype.

remember Bam Bam Meulens- plays for the Newark Bears now.

Russell Davis - ok. not that bad, but not what they hyped him to be.

and a blast from the past: Celerino Sanchez

All we need is a Heisman Caliber Football player to go to the Rangers or Islanders, and we will have a Heisman Player on every New York Team. Except the Football teams.

Actually Francine, Testeverde won the Heisman and so did Ron Dayne, so both NY teams have Heisman winners on the team.

Being a Maize & Blue Fan, it sucks that he is not going to be in the Wolverine Uni this year. But here comes Johnny Navarre who is more than capable of playing the #1 man and U of M.
