Brown remains day-to-day

VERO BEACH, Fla. – Kevin Brown says he's not going to play a guessing game.

There will be no predictions from the Los Angeles ace about when he'll return from his injured right Achilles' tendon, or even about whether he'll be able to pitch Opening Day on April 2.

"It's stiff," said Brown, who walked with a pronounced limp through the Dodgers' clubhouse Saturday. "I'm trying to stay off of it. I'm not going to do anything to really test it. It all

depends on how it recovers, how it responds to treatment."

An exam revealed Saturday that he sprained the tendon Friday in his start against the New York Mets.

"He is day-to-day," trainer Stan Johnston said. "He'll continue his treatments, and we'll see how he does. He will wear a boot as part of his treatment to restrain his motion when he is not here getting treatment."

Brown will miss his final scheduled spring training start Wednesday.

Team physician Frank Jobe said the worst-case scenario is that Brown may be out a few weeks. He cautioned that there's no way to know for sure until the tendon has been rested and treated.

The tendinitis initially thought to be the injury is still there, Jobe said, but the sprain is the more serious injury.

"The question is, of course, when can he pitch in a real game," Jobe said.

Brown, who was 13-6 with a 2.58 ERA in 2000, was on the disabled list from April 9-24 last season because of a fractured right pinky finger. He hasn't started fewer than 26 games since his first full major-league season in 1989 and has been on the disabled list just five times in his career.

Brown doesn't plan to let this injury keep him down for long.

"I'll do everything I can to be there," he said.

As a Dodger fan, it's not looking good heading into this season. There was the whole Sheffield fiasco, Adrian Beltre's appendicitis situation, and now Browns injury.
