PHILADELPHIA (TICKER) -- Philadelphia Flyers center Keith Primeau suffered a partial tear of his left MCL in Monday's 3-3 tie with the Ottawa Senators and will be sidelined at least three weeks.

Primeau, who leads the Flyers with 34 goals, got tangled up with Ottawa defenseman Chris Phillips in the third period and fell feet-first into the boards. He was helped off the ice and did not return.

"I caught a rut at the same time a defenseman was pushing on me," Primeau said. "I felt my knee buckle, so I just let go. It wasn't the impact with the boards that caused the injury."

Primeau was examined on Tuesday by team physician Dr. Peter DeLuca at 3B Orthopedics in Mt. Laurel, New Jersey. An MRI revealed a Grade II MCL sprain, also referred to as a partial tear.

DeLuca said Primeau will undergo rehabilitation for muscle strengthening and will be fitted for a knee brace.

The injury came two nights after star forwards John LeClair and Simon Gagne returned to the lineup. LeClair had missed more than half the season with a back ailment and Gagne was sidelined 12 games with a shoulder injury.

Philadelphia can ill afford to lose the 6-5, 220-pound Primeau for an extended period. He is second on the team in scoring to Mark Recchi with 34 goals and 39 assists and leads the club with 11 power-play goals.

Winless in their last three games (0-2-1-0), the Flyers are fourth in the Eastern Conference, just three points ahead of fifth-place Buffalo. The top four teams receive home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

Well it isn't a total loss for the flyers since they got Leclair back, but it does set them back a bit.
