Aikman to announce retirement plans today

ESPN.com news services

ARLINGTON, Texas – Former Cowboys quarterback, Troy Aikman will announce his retirement today, ending a career that included three Super Bowl championships in Dallas.

Aikman

The Cowboys have called a news conference for 3 p.m. ET at Texas Stadium. Aikman is expected to discuss his future, which probably will include a position with Fox Sports.

The 34-year-old said last week he was considering a broadcasting career.

"Right now, I'm not sure exactly which route I'm going to go," he said before throwing out the first pitch of the Texas Rangers' home opener. "I've got an idea. But there's still some options out there and I'm still kind of weighing those things."

Aikman has been out of work since being waived March 7. The team he led to three Super Bowls and six division titles in 12 seasons cut ties to avoid a $7 million bonus and seven-year contract extension due if he was on the roster on March 8.

Aikman is coming off the worst season of his career and there are questions about his durability. He missed five games last season because of injuries and was knocked out of three more, all in the first quarter.

He also has suffered four concussions in his last 20 starts – giving him 10 in his career – and has a degenerative back problem.

He said his back is a bigger concern than the concussions.

"The concussions, I'm fine. I don't minimize the significance of the injury by saying that, but I feel fine," he said. "The back is something that I tangibly wake up with every single day and know that it's there and it affects my performance."

If Aikman opts to go into broadcasting, he'll likely have his pick of jobs. Fox, which he's worked for as a color commentator on NFL Europe games, is the front-runner.

The network is looking for a game analyst to replace Matt Millen, who joined the Detroit Lions as president and CEO.

thank god, i would have hated seeing troy in a helmet that didnt have a star on it. he brought 3 rings and class to a team that seemed to lack the latter a hell of a lot of the time. its a shame he couldnt stay on with the team at least as a teacher and guide for tony banks for the coming season but hes gotta do what hes gotta do. say what you want about him, but he was a pretty good quarterback and he will be missed. good luck to him in his future endeavors :)

If im wrong, or if im right,

I really agree with you there Faceman, but also Aikman is making the right decision seeing as he has had 10 concusions. Even though I am a Giants fan I wish him the best of luck.

This is a smart move, i'm glad to see that he'll never wear anything other than the stars. Nice to see him come and go as a Cowboy.

being a cowboy fan it will be hard to see emmit without troy but he made the right decision and he came into the game as a cowboy and he'll leave a cowboy

As a Giants fan, I hate the Cowboys, but, at the same time, I just have to like Aikman. Its definately good to see him leaving as a Cowboy. Even I would have hated to see him playing for any other team.

This is the smartest move he made in the last season. I hope he can talk to his children without looking like a chump when he has a couple.

That's a good point. Emmitt is the only piece of the dynasty that's left. Look at the casualty list:

Aikman, Irvin, Moose, Novecek, Newton, Tuinei, Bates, Haley, Erik Williams, Lett, etc.

And to this day we still haven't found a replacement for Jay Novecek! How are we going to replace Troy?
