IRVING, Texas (AP) -- John Avery, a former first-round NFL draft pick who led the XFL in rushing, signed a free-agent contract with the Dallas Cowboys.

He agreed to a minimum one-year deal Monday worth $389,000, the Cowboys said on their Web site.

``I'm just excited about getting the chance to come in and play,'' said Avery, who ran for 800 yards with the Chicago Enforcers this spring. ``I'd rather be here playing behind Emmitt Smith, than somewhere else and fighting for position. Here, I get to learn from the best.''

Avery was the 29th pick in the 1998 draft out of Mississippi by Miami. He rushed for 503 yards as a rookie for the Dolphins, then was traded to Denver, where he played just six games in 1999 and was cut after training camp last season.

``It's a tremendous opportunity to get a look at a guy that we really felt was a first-round talent,'' Cowboys coach Dave Campo said. ``We have him here to take a good look at him.''

After a year out of the NFL, Avery had a successful stint in NFL Europe before this past season in the XFL.

Avery was one of the best guys in the XFL, and one of the few reasons to actually sit through an entire game. I say good luck to him and all, but if the NFL is going to recruit all the XFL guys they rejected in the first place, there won't be much left for MacMahon to work with soon. He was already working with second-tier players... what could he possibly go to next?

The XFL had so much potential too. It didn't help that the first NBC game SUCKED ass. Went downhill from there. It lost the "water cooler" effect too so why bother staying home on a Saturday to watch? Oh well. Vince should merge it with the stupid bodybuilding league (WBA?) he formed years back. That way they will have one lethal league of sucktitude.

Oh yeah, Avery has speed but you watch fumbleitis will strike again.

But there's also this: there are over 5,000 men in this city, who know that being a policeman is an endless, glamourless, thankless job that's gotta be done.

I know it, too, and I'm damn glad to be one of them."

I hope to see him on the roster. He can move and break tackles with the best of them

This will probably make the XFL better cause now the guys have something to look forward to if they do well. Even though the talent might not be that great, they'll play their asses off every game cause they know that the NFL is watching.
