WASHINGTON (AP) -- Irving Fryar says he plans to retire from professional football again rather than play one more year with the Washington Redskins.

``I won't be there next year,'' Fryar told The Washington Post. ``I just want to leave quietly. I wasn't intending to make an announcement.''

Fryar, 38, is the fifth-leading receiver in NFL history and played the past two seasons with the Redskins. He was released in February as the team got under the league salary cap, but subsequently was offered an opportunity to play one more year.

After retiring from the Philadelphia Eagles following the 1998 season he started working for a Philadelphia television station -- before being lured back to the playing field by the Redskins -- and recently has been announcing NFL Europe games.

Fryar told the Post he is not sure what he will do next.

``I'm just waiting around to see what happens,'' he said. ``I don't want to make a bid deal out of it. I just want to move on. I won't be playing.''

In addition to the Redskins and Eagles, Fryar's 17-year playing career included stints with the New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins. He was the first overall choice by the Patriots in the 1984 NFL draft.
