Goals by forwards Clint Mathis and Alex Comas gave the MetroStars a 2-0 victory over recently crowned 2001 European and German champions Bayern Munich in a Saturday night exhibition at Giants Stadium. More accurate finishing would have allowed the reigning MLS Eastern Division champions to pad the scoring on the numerous scoring opportunities the team enjoyed.

Bayern Munich fielded a starting lineup who averaged nearly 19 appearances in their victorious Bundesliga campaign.

Mathis netted the first goal in the 36th minute. Bayern defender Michael Tarnat attempted a pass to a teammate on the back line, but Mathis was there to intercept it. The Conyers, Georgia native, the only forward pressuring at the time, then used a delightful chip to loft the ball over goalkeeper Bernd Dreher, who almost managed to get his fingertips on the ball.

Comas almost doubled in the 43rd minute when Steve Shak sent in a cross from the right side. The Colombian raced to the ball but his glancing header was deflected by Dreher into a corner. Off the ensuing corner kick, Shak, in the center of the box, knocked the ball on goal but Dreher, again called into action, made the save.

The MetroStars doubled a few moments after Shak's opportunity. Pedro Alvarez fed Mark Chung on the left flank and the winger sent in a perfectly weighted cross into the box. Comas was there to snap a header down to the lower right corner of the goal, past a helpless Dreher.

Mathis, MLS' leading scorer, could have opened the scoring even earlier in the contest. In the 25th minute he beat the offside trap on a pass from Comas but he lofted a 25-yard shot over Dreher which bounced just wide of the left post. The MetroStars had another dangerous scoring opportunity in the 35th minute, one minute before Mathis' goal. Comas was picked out on the right side of the box but his close-range shot from the right corner of the six-yard box was saved by Dreher.

The home team was also the most dominant in the second half. Chung hit the right side of the crossbar in the 52nd minute. Chung would later hit the woodwork again when he struck the upper left corner of the goal on a violent right-footed shot from 15 yards out in the 85th minute.

In two other near-miss opportunities second-half substitute Petter Villegas even dribbled by Dreher in the middle of Bayern's box but the goalkeeper recovered just as Villegas was about to take a shot into an open net. In the 82nd minute substitute Rodrigo Faria also had just the 'keeper to beat when he beat the offside trap and ended up going one-on-one against Dreher. But the MLS rookie's shot finished wide right.

Bayern's offensive initiatives of the first half were limited to a 34th minute diagonal shot from Roque Santa Cruz that finished wide left and a Tarnat strike from outside the box which finished wide right. First half goalkeeper, Tim Howard, was timely in coming off his line and his second-half substitute, Paul Grafer was secure in the one dangerous Bayern opportunity on a Alexander Zickler header in the 81st minute.

While Bayern was coming off the European Champions League final in Milan, Italy against Valencia on Wednesday, the MetroStars played a Thursday regular season loss at Arrowhead Stadium against the Kansas City Wizards.

The MetroStars return to MLS action on Sunday, June 3rd when they travel to Foxboro Stadium to take on Eastern division rivals the New England Revolution (7:00 p.m. ET).

What is the UEFA Champions’ League?

The UEFA Champions’ League is the most important club competition in Europe, and only the clubs that have proved to be among the toughest in the various European leagues may participate in it. Every year, the top teams of each national championship are divided into eight groups of four teams. After what is called the first group stage, only the first two teams of each group make it to the second phase, which consists of four groups of four. The eight teams that pass the turn (two for each group) then play the quarterfinals of the Champions League in two-game rounds. The same happens in the semifinals, but not in the final, which is a single game played in one of the most important European cities chosen before the beginning of the competition.

Okay... NYR3228126281912832165213(whatever)
Listen up right fucking now!
different people are into different things.. I'm not gonna tool on you for being a fan of that CART stuff or being a huge fan of this Soccer league..
What i am getting pissed off about is the fact that these threads interest no one but you (and one other guy i guess) and you refuse to stop creating them!!
Example: I am a Respiratory Therapy student.. i could talk for hours about medical stuff and patients that i deal with.. HOWEVER, i don't! Ya know why? Cause i'm the only one that would be interested in it!
Example2: I am also a HUGE Dallas Cowboy fan.. But i won't be starting a Dallas Cowboys Chat thread this fall! Know why? Cause Froy and I are the only ones here who would be interested in it!!
Are you getting the fucking point yet numbnuts? Now cut it the fuck out!!!!

Hey MS, where are you sitting? I'm in turn 4, about 1/2 way up the stands. Can't wait to sit in all the f-n traffic.

My fathers seats are right by you. He has the top row in turn four. Me and my neighbor got seats about four years ago so we could take our kids. Not as good, start finish line, about 20 rows up. There is one good thing about sitting there, you get to see the pre race shit pretty good. It is a great track though, and as for traffic, it's only going to get worse, they keep adding fucking seats.

I know what you mean. We usually split off of Rt 13 after the big bridge onto Rt 9. Takes you to the back side of the track - no traffic to speak of, but you have to be careful driving thru all the little hick towns.

LMFAO, that is the way we have been going for eight years. NO one used to know about it. It is getting a little crowded now. It moves, but there are cars there. When we first went, you would see nobody. How about that portable sign that seys Smyrna closed. I mean do they really close the whole fucking town on race day? Hope the weather is O.K.. They said rain yesterday, but yahoo weather seys just cloudy and a high of 75. Sounds good to me.

Great post NYR...it was a really good match they had against bayern, especially coming off a disappointing loss to KC the other night. Thanks for the post!
