what a great race and a fabulous victory celebration by Helio Castroneves. jumping on the fence and almost forgetting about the trip to victory lane. the whole crew jumping on the fence was pretty funny too. now all we have to do is see if stewart can get to nc in 2 hours. should be interesting to see what happens. btw my stewart bias will show here and i will say that for a nascar driver, he ran a heck of a race. if it wasnt for stalling out his engine 3 times, who knows what would have happened. oh well its on to the coca cola 600 and we will see what we will see, lets hope for another good race:)

just an update, stewart just arrived in nc about 5 minutes ago with 30 minutes to spare. not a bad trip, an hour from indiana to nc by helicopter. they should start their own airline with times like that;)

Penske Sweeps, IRL Weeps

http://espn.go.com/rpm/irl/2001/0527/1205493.html

INDIANAPOLIS -- Leave it to Spiderman to prove the Indianapolis 500 still belongs to Roger Penske.

Indy rookie Helio Castroneves led teammate and fellow Brazilian Gil de Ferran in a 1-2 Penske finish, giving the renowned owner a triumphant return Sunday to the 500-mile race.

"It's the best of my life, redeeming myself like this," said Penske, following a record 11th victory at Indy after failing to put any drivers in the race in 1995 and a five-year boycott by Championship Auto Racing Teams.

The 26-year-old Castroneves celebrated by demonstrating for fans why he is known as Spiderman on the CART circuit. He stopped his red and white car near the finish line after a cool-down lap, jumped up the steel-mesh fence, pumped his fist and signaled for his team to join him.

They did. Marlboro Team Penske raced across the track, climbed the short concrete wall and scaled the fence, to the delight of the Indy crowd.

De Ferran, Michael Andretti, Jimmy Vasser and rookie Bruno Junqueira took the top five positions, making it a tough day for the rival Indy Racing League, which considers Indy its centerpiece.

Tony Stewart, attempting to race in the 500 and NASCAR's Coca-Cola 600 in Concord, N.C., on the same day for the second time in three years, led for a while and wound up sixth.

Despite seven cautions and a 16-minute red flag for rain, he finished with enough time to get to the other race.

Indy got off to a shaky start when pole-winner Scott Sharp lost control on cold, slick tires and crashed on the first turn of the first of 200 laps.

The green flag came out again on lap seven. But one lap later, Sarah Fisher, the only woman in the 33-car field, crashed in the second turn under circumstances similar to Sharp's. She hit the wall and took out Scott Goodyear's car.

Goodyear, a two-time runner-up, was in good condition at Methodist Hospital with a fractured lower back, the only injury of the race.

This was the first oval victory for Castroneves, whose four previous victories -- all in CART -- came on road and street courses.

In only his second season with Penske, after two years with weaker teams, Castroneves is considered a strong contender in his regular series. At Indy, though, he was less touted than his older teammate, defending CART champion de Ferran, and was one of a dozen or more favorites.

The race appeared up for grabs among the two Penske drivers, Andretti and Stewart when all made a pit stop on lap 137 during a caution brought on by rookie Cory Witherill's harmless spin.

De Ferran led going in, followed by Castroneves, Andretti and Stewart.

As the cars left their pits, Castroneves darted into the outer part of the two-lane pit road, alongside de Ferran and directly in front of Stewart, who braked hard. Andretti banged into the rear of Stewart's car, damaging his front wing.

IRL officials penalized Castroneves for driving into the outer lane by giving the lead to Stewart before the green, and the former IRL champion stayed out front until he pitted on lap 148.

Castroneves inherited the lead and stayed out front the rest of the way, fighting off a challenge from de Ferran and IRL regular Robbie Buhl, who spun out of contention on lap 165.

De Ferran's best shot at the leader came on a restart on lap 172 when he attempted to get around Castroneves on the outside in the first turn of the 2½-mile oval. But both Penske cars had to back off.

Castroneves was unchallenged the rest of the way, beating de Ferran to the finish by 1.74 seconds and joining former Penske winners Rick Mears (four times), Mark Donohue, Bobby Unser, Al Unser, Al Unser Sr. Danny Sullivan and Emerson Fittipaldi.

The Penske cars raced without the Marlboro sponsor logos, giving the cars a bare red and white look. The team agreed to remove the decals because of the settlement with tobacco companies reached by a group of state attorneys general in 1998.

Castroneves, however, celebrated in victory lane, drinking from the traditional bottle of milk and wearing a baseball cap emblazoned with a Marlboro logo.

Penske Dallara cars were powered by Oldsmobile engines produced by Ilmor, a company partially owned by Penske and which did not begin building IRL motors until February.

The engines had never even completed a 500-mile test before Sunday's victory

well the 600 is over and i have to say it was a pretty good conclusion to a great day of racing. its about time jeff burton won another race. and how about his crew pulling a Castroneves and climbing the fence. another truly great moment.

and how about stewart 3rd place after starting 43rd and almost losing it in the 2nd lap. 1100 miles of racing and 2 top 6 finishes to show for it. thats a hell of a day of racing i would say:)and the best part of his day is that he raised $240,000 for charity for finishing every lap in both race. the money goes to Victory Junction Gang Camp is a planned extension of the original Hole In The Wall Gang Camp founded for kids by Paul Newman. Kyle Petty, driver of the #45 Sprint Dodge and wife Pattie, who created the annual Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America in 1995, plan to build the Victory Junction Gang Camp in Randleman, N.C., in honor of their late son, Adam. Like the Hole In The Wall Gang Camp and its six other sister organizations, the Victory Junction Gang Camp will be a permanent, year-round center that will accommodate children with chronic and life-threatening diseases at no cost to the children or their families. so it was a great day on and off the track for tony stewart and his charity:) here is to another great day of racing:)

Bad Day For The IRL’s Finest

The much-anticipated battle between some of the best that the CART series had to offer facing off against the Indy Racing League’s best and brightest, never materialized Sunday afternoon at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway as the IRL cars fell away early and often at the 2.5mi oval.

Things started turning sour for the IRL on the very first turn as polesitter Scott Sharp went well low in Turn 1, losing control as the left wheels slipped under the white line. He corrected once but could not reel the No. 8 car in, as he hit the wall and retired without finishing a lap. Sharp would suffer the ignominy of being the fifth driver ever to finish last after winning the Indy pole, and followed in the footsteps of Greg Ray, who turned the same trick a year ago.

"It snapped right out on me. I thought I caught it, but I didn’t," lamented Sharp. "I feel so bad for the people that worked so hard."

Another of the series’ bright hopes saw her day end just seven laps later, spinning and collecting Scott Goodyear and putting them both in the fence. Fisher was unhurt, but Goodyear was admitted to Methodist Hospital where he was found to have a fracture in his lower back.

"The whole month of May it hasn’t been this cold, and there’s been no chance to test in the cold," Fisher said. "There’s no grip at all out there. It was just loose, there’s nothing to explain. It’s an unreal feeling. There’s no grip in the front, there’s no grip in the rear. It’s something we thought we’d be prepared for, but it was worse than we thought."

Things continued to get worse as IRL wunderkind and points leader Sam Hornish Jr. spun just after the restart, setting himself behind for the rest of the race and taking out Al Unser Jr. in the process.

"Sam spun and left me nowhere to go," Unser said. "We hadn’t had enough time to get heat to the tires. Not just because the track is cold, but we didn’t have enough time to get heat into anything because we just hadn’t run."

Greg Ray would be the next to go, falling prey to the vicious onslaught from Michael Andretti as the two battled for the lead. Ray chased Andretti with both drivers snapping off 218mph laps for four consecutive circuits before Ray went high and brushed the Turn 3 wall. That bump forced him to give up the lead, and the 2000 Indy polesitter would never challenge again.

Robbie Buhl was the last-gasp hope for the hometowners, as he was the only one of the top eight drivers on a Lap-158 restart who was an IRL regular. But after not pitting for fuel along with the two Team Penske machines for the late restart, Buhl climbed all over the back of Helio Castroneves for three laps and nearly had his pass made after posting his best lap of the day with 35 orbits to go.

It would be his last lap of the day, however, as Buhl lost the rear end of his car coming out of Turn 2 and backed into the wall, ending his victory run.

"We had a car that could have won," said Buhl. "I laid down a gear just trying to get a run on Castroneves and it got loose. There was a slower car in front of Castroneves, and I thought I could get a run on him if he got caught up by the slower car. When I spun out there, I didn’t spin trying to hold on, I spun trying to go for the lead. I don’t have any regrets for that."

But while the first six cars in the final order had distinct CART ties, the winners were quick to say that it could have gone the other way.

"I don’t think we need to look at a lot of statistics to say that we’re better," said Roger Penske. "There were a lot of good cars out there today, and there are some guys out here that could drive our cars with no problem. A lot of their guys just had bad luck today."

Castroneves Leads Five-Man CART Sweep At Indy

In his first few trips around Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Helio Castroneves couldn't seem to negotiate the first turn.

On Sunday, he negotiated 800 turns flawlessly.

Castroneves ran away from teammate Gil de Ferran and gave car owner Roger Penske his 11th Indianapolis 500 victory in his return to the race after a six-year absence. Castroneves, a 26-year-old Brazilian known for his road-racing prowess, finished 1.737 seconds ahead of de Ferran for the first oval win of his career.

It didn't come easy. Castroneves, an Indy rookie, twice left tire marks on the first-turn wall during practice sessions earlier this month. He conquered his fear of the tricky turn and quickly mastered the prestigious track.

"I was getting a little frustrated with turn one until I reached the point where I was kissing the wall," Castroneves said of his practice runs. "I finally said, 'OK, that's the limit.' I began to understand the car, but I was getting upset with myself. I didn't change the way I was driving, but I began to adapt. As you get more experience, you're going to respect the oval. That's what happened here. This track is very technical. It looks as if all four corners are the same, but they're not."

Recently castigated by CART officials for his celebratory climbing of catch fences after winning races, Castroneves stopped his car near the start-finish line and leaped onto the fence along the frontstretch. His pit crew quickly joined him. The only one missing was Penske himself.

"I'm waiting until later tonight to climb the fence," Penske said. "I'm waiting until it's dark so nobody can see me."

Castroneves' win also continued CART teams' recent domination of the Indy 500. Last year, Juan Montoya ran away with the race in Chip Ganassi's return to Indianapolis Motor Speedway. On Sunday, the top six finishers -- Castroneves, de Ferran, Michael Andretti, Jimmy Vasser, Bruno Junqueira and Tony Stewart -- had CART ties.

Despite the show of power, CART drivers refused to play politics after the race. They praised several IRL drivers, including Greg Ray, Robbie Buhl and Mark Dismore, and even indicated the CART sweep may have been more coincidence than talent or resources.

"From where I was sitting, the race was very competitive," de Ferran said. "Ray was competitive, Gordon was competitive, Stewart was up there, and Robbie (Buhl) was tough. It was tight. I wouldn't say we were dominating. I have no idea how to resolve this situation. I put that out of my thoughts a long time ago."

Michael Andretti, another CART driver who returned after a lengthy absence, had only one thought.

"What I want to know is why Penske came back the same year I did," Andretti said, laughing.

The final challenge from an Indy Racing League team ended when Robbie Buhl spun while chasing Castroneves on the 165th lap of the 200-lap race. Buhl, who said during a brief rain delay that he had enough car to win the race, lost control coming out of the second turn.

"Sorry, guys," Buhl told his crew members over the radio. "I just got loose and lost it."

Losing it was the theme of the first few laps of the race. Pole winner Scott Sharp spun out in the first turn. Sarah Fisher spun out on the eighth lap, collecting Scott Goodyear, who sustained a fracture in his lower back.

Sam Hornish Jr. spun on the fourth turn on the restart on the 17th lap, taking out Al Unser Jr. All three drivers had dropped below the painted white line before spinning out.

"I'd been running on the white line all month and it never bit me," Fisher said. "I don't think it's the white line. It's just cold out there. There's absolutely no grip at all."

After the three early delays, the drivers went on a clean run for 72 laps before a yellow flag for debris. On the ensuing restart, Greg Ray led Michael Andretti in a chase to reach the 101st lap -- the mark of an official race -- and an effort to beat an approaching rain shower. On the 103rd lap, though, Ray brushed the wall between the third and fourth turns. Seconds later, Andretti passed him.

Tony Stewart was awarded the lead after Castroneves puled in front of him while leaving his pit stall on the 136th lap. Andretti got the worst of it, rear-ending Stewart as he locked up to avoid hitting Castroneves.

"Everybody got into a big pileup," Andretti said. "I got the worst of it because I was at the back of the pile."

Later, during another yellow, Castroneves regained the lead in the pits.

"We don't have any team orders," Penske said. "Gil told me over the radio that he had to go on the restarts, that it was the only way he was going to get around Helio. I certainly didn't tell him not to do that. I've always said, 'Take care of each other.' "

After the short red-flag period, Buhl stalked Castroneves for nine laps before spinning. After that, it was all Castroneves.

"The last 10 laps were unbelievable," Castroneves said. "It was the longest. They kept counting off the laps. When they said 10, I thought for sure I was at eight. It was really long."

And, after the checkered flags, the only remaining summit to reach was the top of a fence.

"I knew he was going to do something stupid," de Ferran said with a grin. "I just didn't know what it would be."

Provisional results from the Indianapolis 500 follow:

Tony George must be kicking himself with the CART sweep.

Props to Tony Stewart on finishing both races, seemed better at the end today than the last time. I remember them rushing him to the aid center for severe dehydration. Though in NASCAR now, one must remember Stewart's a former IRL champ. Good thing he left that circuit.

"CART winning the war with IRL"

INDIANAPOLIS – To some, the war between CART and the IRL is still alive -- and the results of Sunday's Indy 500 suggest that CART is winning.

CART (Championship Auto Racing Team) drivers took the top five positions and CART owners claimed the leading six, leaving the remainder to the IRL (Indy Racing League) with the exception of sixth-placed driver Tony Stewart, a former IRL champion who now drives on the NASCAR stock car circuit.

The IRL was founded in 1996 by Tony George, president and CEO of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, to rival CART because of a number of issues including cost.

The resulting schism has meant the two series sometimes race similar cars on conflicting weekends.

In the first year there was a bitter war of words between the circuits, but last year owner Chip Ganassi crossed the line from CART and entered and won the Indy 500 with Colombian driver Juan Pablo Montoya, who has gone on to join the BMW-Williams Formula One team.

Now Roger Penske, a co-founder of CART, has also returned to the race he once dominated, claiming a one-two finish that extended his record total of Indy 500 wins to 11.

He also claimed victory for the older circuit. "I don't think we need to look at statistics here to say it was a CART win. A lot of the IRL drivers had problems," he said.

But he added: "There were a number of IRL drivers who could drive our cars. The statistics don't make it a CART race or an IRL race."

Third-place finisher Michael Andretti, a former critic of the IRL, also soft-pedalled the rivalry. "Luck was against them," he said of the IRL drivers. "We were all mixing it up together. We ended up on top but a lot of them had trouble."

Penske called for a reunification. "We need to have one open-wheel racing series. That way we can take open-wheel racing where it needs to be because we need to take it up a bit."
