As a net fan, I think they might be finally going somewhere in the future. We got 3 #1's and Kidd. Marbury was a pre madonna and a healthy Van Horn with Kittles can prove effective. Not to mention Kenyon Martin, has superstar written all over him. Here come the Nets!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Nets can do no right it seems. Jason Kidd is great, but I'm sorry, they need Marbury more. Marbury is gonna take the Suns to the next level. Hopefully the Knicks start getting a little active with these free agents and get Chris Webber. I would not mind losing Houston for Webber at all. I just want one of my clubs to do something, since the Mets and the Hockey Rangers decided to sit on their hands and do nothing.

Yea i be taking that zoloff, but thaz jus keepin me from killin y'all.

Houston, Knicks reportedly close to deal

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ESPN.com news services

Houston

NEW YORK -- Allan Houston is close to reaching an agreement that would make him the high-paid player in New York Knicks history, the New York Times reported on Friday.

The Times reports that Houston and the Knicks are near agreement on a long-term deal for about $100 million. Houston and his agent, Bill Strickland, met with James L. Dolan, the president of Cablevision, and Scott Layden, the team's president and general manager, at an undisclosed location in Manhattan on Thursday night.

Layden said he would have no comment until July 18, when teams can officially sign players and a new NBA salary cap is in place.

Depending on the new salary cap, to be set on July 17, Houston could receive from $99 million to $103 million over six years. Houston, 30, represented the Knicks on the Eastern Conference All-Star team for the second straight season, averaging 18.7 points last season.

The total package would dwarf the four-year, $68 million deal Patrick Ewing signed in 1997.

If the Knicks do commit to Houston on July 18, using him in a deal to secure Chris Webber or any other highly coveted free agent in a sign-and-trade deal this summer would be highly unlikely, if not impossible.

Alright, now I'm pissed even more than before. Houston might be a good guy, but he is not worth 100 million bucks. This guy is not a leader, and even though he is a great free throw shooter, he somehow manages to miss every clutch 4th quarter free throw. If this is the way the Knicks are going to go, then they will not see the playoffs next year, or for years to come for that matter. The Rangers better do something soon too.

Barkley: 'There's no way I could play'

July 8, 2001

STATELINE, Nev. (AP) -- Hold those thoughts on a comeback for Charles Barkley. He's simply not ready to take on NBA players again.

``I don't think I could play well,'' he said. ``Right now I'm just working out to get in shape. ... There is no way I could play.''

Barkley was asked by NBC's Jim Gray during Saturday's coverage of the Celebrity Golf Championship if he was abandoning his comeback plans.

``I'm leaning heavily towards that,'' he said.

The 38-year-old Barkley retired after the 1999-00 season after rupturing a knee tendon. In the last few months he has floated the possibility of a joint comeback with Michael Jordan, now president of the Washington Wizards.

Jordan cracked two ribs during a basketball workout in June and has not disclosed his plans for next season. Barkley is not eager to see his friend back on the court.

``I hope he doesn't,'' he said. ``If he wants to come back I'll support him. Michael's his own man.''

Well, I guess this means Barkley will stay with TNT for the pre and post game shows for games. He would have been more useful there anyway. As for MJ, I am also with Sir Charles on this one. Jordan should not come back and get embarrassed by bums like Kobe. MJ is great, but he is also old, and will probably be beaten off the dribble 90% of the time...unless he is playing against Allan Houston.

Yea i be taking that zoloff, but thaz jus keepin me from killin y'all.

This is why the NBA is in the sorry state it is in now. Paying an above-average-if-unspectacular player like Houston $100 million is just inexcseable. They really should make a move for Webber instead, and if they do sign Houston, there's probably no way they'll get him.

Patterson signs offer sheet with Blazers

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

SEATTLE -- Ruben Patterson, the No. 3 scorer for the Seattle SuperSonics, signed an offer sheet with the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday.

Patterson has pleaded guilty to a sexual offense and recently served a 15-day sentence on home detention. If he would have stayed with the Sonics, he would have had to register as a sex offender in Washington state.

The Sonics could have matched the Blazers' offer because the 6-foot-5 forward was a restricted free agent. But they chose not to sign him to a sign-and-trade deal.

"The Sonics have no intention of exercising our matching rights on this offer," Seattle general manager Rick Sund said. "This will clear additional cap room space for the Sonics to pursue free agents. Ruben has made on-court contributions to the Sonics in the past two seasons and we wish him well."

Patterson averaged 13.1 points, 5.0 rebounds and 27.1 minutes a game last season.

He is from Cleveland and also spoke with the Cavaliers.

Patterson entered a modified guilty plea to a third-degree rape charge involving his children's nanny. He was charged with forcing the family's 24-year-old nanny to perform oral sex. He was sentenced May 15 and still faces a civil suit from the nanny.

Under his plea, Patterson did not admit guilt but agreed a jury might convict him.

im surprised that anyone is still using this thread to put their nba stories on lol. To add another transaction, the T-wolves resigned Joe SMith...big mistake there.

I agree. Marbury was a ball hog who didn't know the word team. Not to mention his family all over the court making a spectacle of themselves. Maybe Van Horn can regain his shot now that Marbury the ball hog is gone. Shit, I could average 25ppg if I took 80 shots a game like him.

The best was a game last year when Marbury got hurt, and his Fat Mommma comes sprinting on the court, and then Marbury gets up and hes like "Awww Ma, Get out of here". He felt like such a tool. It was even more funnier than watching the Nets play.

Reports say Carter near $94 million deal

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

TORONTO -- Vince Carter might be staying with the Toronto Raptors for a long time.

Carter

The NBA star is close to signing a six-year contract extension worth about $94 million that would keep him with the team through 2008, The Toronto Star reported Tuesday.

The Toronto Globe and Mail reported the deal would be worth $88 million.

"Wednesday, I'll probably make my decision," Carter said Monday at a youth basketball camp.

Wednesday is the first day NBA teams can negotiate an extension that would take effect for the 2002-03 season.

"Everything seems pretty encouraging," Raptors general manager Glen Grunwald told The Fan, a Toronto all-sports radio station, on Tuesday. "We don't have any official word yet, so we're waiting to hear about Vince. But the signs look pretty good."

The Raptors recently locked up three key free agents, re-signing Antonio Davis, Jerome Williams and Alvin Williams to long-term contracts.

"Vince is very happy with the direction of the team and the energy around it right now," Carter's agent, Merle Scott, told the Globe and Mail. "When you sign three major pieces of the puzzle, that shows the confidence these people have in the team."

Scott did not immediately return messages from The Associated Press seeking comment.

Carter has been Toronto's most prolific player in its six-year history, averaging 24.6 points a game in his first three seasons with the club.

Under the NBA's collective bargaining agreement, Carter would become a restricted free agent next summer if he doesn't sign an extension by Oct. 31.

Grunwald may have given Carter another good reason to stay. The GM was in Houston on Monday for further negotiations with Rockets center Hakeem Olajuwon.

The Raptors can offer Olajuwon a four-year contract worth $22 million, more than double what the Rockets reportedly had offered.

Report: Olajuwon set to join Raptors

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ESPN.com news services

Free agent center Hakeem Olajuwon has agreed to a three-year deal with the Toronto Raptors, ESPN's David Aldridge reported on Wednesday.

Olajuwon ended negotations with the Houston Rockets earlier Wednesday.

Sources close to the negotiations between the Rockets and their longtime star told television station KRIV and the Houston Chronicle that Olajuwon called off talks with the Rockets after rejecting the club's latest offer of $13 million guaranteed over three years.

"Hakeem is going to Toronto," a source who had spoken to Olajuwon told the newspaper. "It's a done deal. They will announce it tomorrow.

"This has really torn him apart. Honestly, he did not want to leave until (Tuesday or Wednesday). He has something to prove. Everybody believed he was done. But he is not done."

Previously, the 38-year-old Olajuwon reportedly had turned down a three-year, $10.2 million offer by the Rockets.

KRIV also reported the team, which did not immediately return a message left by The Associated Press, has begun discussing an arrangement in which the Rockets would sign Olajuwon and trade him to the Raptors. Such a deal would allow Olajuwon to reap more money and permit the Rockets to get something in return.

The reports speculated a trade might involve one or more draft picks, perhaps along with a $5.1 million trade exception Toronto acquired from the Chicago Bulls in exchange for forward Charles Oakley.

The trade exception, valid for 12 months, would allow the Rockets to acquire players within $5.1 million in salary rather than matching salaries under NBA salary cap rules.

Olajuwon played in 58 games for the Rockets last season, averaging 11.9 points and 7.4 rebounds and making 49.8 percent of his shots.

In his 17 seasons with the Rockets, Olajuwon averaged 22.5 points and 11.4 rebounds. He is the NBA all-time blocked shots leader with 3740 and a 14-time All Star.

The former University of Houston star led the Rockets to back-to-back NBA championships in 1994 and 1995. He was named as one of the NBA's 50 all-time greatest players and was on the 1996 gold medal-winning Olympic basketball team.

In 1994, Olajuwon became the only player in league history to win defensive player of the year, league most valuable player and NBA Finals MVP honors in the same season.

He is the NBA all-time blocked shots leader with 3,740 and a 14-time All-Star.

Rockets owner says Hakeem headed to Raptors

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

HOUSTON -- The Houston Rockets have agreed to sign and trade longtime star center Hakeem Olajuwon to the Toronto Raptors for two draft picks, team owner Les Alexander said Wednesday.

"Hakeem's decision is disappointing for the entire Rockets organization," Alexander said. "Hakeem Olajuwon has meant more to this franchise and this city than any other athlete in Houston history.

"We desperately wanted to keep him in a Rockets uniform for the remainder of his career and made every attempt to do so. It is with a heavy heart that we have agreed to his request."

Alexander, in an interview with Houston television station KRIV, said the Rockets will get a first-round pick and a second-round pick from Toronto.

Earlier in the day, Olajuwon reportedly called off talks with the Rockets after rejecting the club's latest offer of $13 million guaranteed over three years.

"This has really torn him apart," a source who had spoken with Olajuwon told the Houston Chronicle. "Honestly, he did not want to leave until (Tuesday or Wednesday). He has something to prove. Everybody believed he was done. But he is not done."

Earlier this week, the 38-year-old Olajuwon reportedly turned down a three-year, $10.2 million offer by the Rockets before they upped it at the last minute.

"Since I've owned the club for eight years, Hakeem has always been a part of it. Always synonymous with the Rockets has been Hakeem Olajuwon," Alexander said. "To lose that is sad, but we're moving on to a new era with young players, and we'll make the best of it."

Olajuwon played in 58 games for the Rockets last season, averaging 11.9 points and 7.4 rebounds and making 49.8 percent of his shots.

In his 17 seasons with the Rockets, Olajuwon averaged 22.5 points and 11.4 rebounds. He is the NBA all-time blocked shots leader with 3,740 and a 14-time All Star.

The former University of Houston star led the Rockets to back-to-back NBA championships in 1994 and 1995. He was named as one of the NBA's 50 all-time greatest players and was on the 1996 gold medal-winning U.S. Olympic basketball team.

In 1994, Olajuwon became the only player in league history to win defensive player of the year, league most valuable player and NBA Finals MVP honors in the same season.

The possibility of an Olajuwon trade was discussed at Vince Carter's news conference to announce he had agreed to a six-year contract extension.

"I'll go sign him myself if I have to." Carter said. "If he's listening, `We're waiting on you Dream."'

The addition of Olajuwon would give the Raptors their first marquee center and allow Antonio Davis to return to his natural power forward position.

Carter couldn't hide his excitement at playing with a center of the 17-year veteran's calibere.

"My thoughts, on playing with a center?" Carter laughed. "And The Dream at that?

"I think he's a great player....He's ready. I'm definitely up for giving him another chance to show what he has to show."

Robinson signs 5-year, $30M contract

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

CHICAGO -- Restricted free agent forward Eddie Robinson, who played his first two seasons with Charlotte, signed with the Chicago Bulls on Tuesday.

Last month, Robinson signed a five-year, $30 million offer sheet with Chicago. The Hornets had 15 days to match but could not do so because of salary cap constrains.

The 6-foot-9 Robinson averaged 17.3 minutes, 7.2 points and 2.9 rebounds in two seasons with the Hornets.

Robinson averaged 12 points and 4.7 rebounds against the Miami Heat in the first round of the playoffs last season. He shot 50 percent or higher in 21 straight games from Feb. 2-March 23.

Undrafted out of Central Oklahoma, Robinson was signed as a free agent by Charlotte in August 1999.

Mavs add Hardaway to talented mix

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

DALLAS -- Guard Tim Hardaway is reuniting with coach Don Nelson, giving the young Dallas Mavericks an experienced on-court leader.

The Mavericks finalized a sign-and-trade deal Wednesday to acquire Hardaway from the Miami Heat. A tentative agreement was reached late Tuesday.

"We feel really good about getting Tim Hardaway," Nelson said. "He is the quality of player we want to help us not just in the regular season, but also in the playoffs."

The Heat get Dallas' $3.2 million trade exception and a second-round draft pick within three years. Hardaway will receive a three-year contract worth about $10 million.

Hardaway, a five-time All-Star, turns 35 on Sept. 1 and understands he won't be the main man in Dallas. His role is to back up starting point guard Steve Nash and at times play with him.

When they're together, Dallas could use All-Star Michael Finley at small forward and rising star Dirk Nowitzki at power forward. The trio of Nash, Finley and Nowitzki led the Mavs to their best season in more than a decade last year, carrying them into the second round of the playoffs.

"I'm excited to be reuniting with Don Nelson," Hardaway told the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel. "I'm happy to be going to an up-and-coming team that is eager to win. And I'm going with some good friends in Juwan Howard and Michael Finley."

"Tim's experience is huge for us," Mavs owner Mark Cuban said. "He knows his role coming in is to back up Nash and at times give us a shot with him and Nash on the court at the same time. That means about 20 minutes per game, which should hopefully lead to Tim extending his career with the Mavs and the NBA. He can definitely still play."

Hardaway will be in Dallas for a news conference Thursday.

Howard Eisley was signed last summer to play the same role now going to Hardaway. Eisley had his moments, but wasn't consistent and went into a shooting slump late in the season and never recovered. Dallas dealt him to New York earlier this month in a three-way trade that sent Glenn Rice to Houston and created the salary slot Hardaway will be filling.

Hardaway has averaged 18.6 points and 8.6 assists over his 11-year career, but has been plagued by foot and knee injuries the last two seasons. He averaged 14.9 points and 6.3 assists last season.

Nelson, the Dallas coach and general manager, was with Golden State when he made Hardaway a first-round pick out of Texas-El Paso in 1989.

Hardaway combined with Mitch Richmond and Chris Mullin to form the Run TMC trio that turned the Warriors into an elite team before going their separate ways without winning a title.

Nelson wanted to bring all three to Dallas this season, but Mitch Richmond signed with the Los Angeles Lakers, and Mullin, whom Nelson wanted as an assistant, decided to play another season.

This deal probably concludes a typically busy offseason for Nelson, who re-signed Finley and Shawn Bradley and signed free agents Evan Eschmeyer and Danny Manning.

The Mavs also lost starting center Calvin Booth to Seattle through free agency and saw player personnel director Kiki Vandeweghe become general manager in Denver.
