The Oakland Athletics have added some punch to their lineup as they chase the American League wild card spot, acquiring outfielder Jermaine Dye in a three-team deal.

Dye joins the streaking Athletics from the Kansas City Royals, for whom he was batting .272 with 13 homers and 47 RBI in 97 games. He had a career year in 2000, finishing at .321 with 33 homers and 118 RBI.

Oakland has won 16 of its last 20 games to move within four games of the wild-card lead.

Heading to the Royals from Colorado is shortstop Neifi Perez, while Oakland sent three minor-leaguers to the Rockies -- outfielder Mario Encarnacion, infielder Jose Ortiz and lefthander Todd Belitz.

It's a deal that could have ramifications throughout the league as the Tuesday trading deadline approaches.

With the addition of Perez, the Royals now have two starting shortstops and could likely send Rey Sanchez to a contender in the upcoming days. In addition, many believe that the New York Mets would try to deal their shortstop, Rey Ordonez, now that Perez has found a new home.

The Athletics' acquisition of Dye seems to indicate that they have every intention of making a run at the playoffs. Reigning AL Most Valuable Player Jason Giambi is on the block because of his impending free agency and now Oakland has added a bat if it does decide to trade the slugger.

Dye, a 27-year-old right-handed hitter, started for the AL in the 2000 All-Star Game and won his first Gold Glove following the season. He has spent the last five seasons with Kansas City after starting his career in Atlanta.

A .284 career hitter with 97 home runs and 366 RBI in 645 major league games, Dye is in the second season of a two-year contract. He will be eligible for arbitration next year.

Perez, 26, was batting .298 with seven homers and 47 RBI in 87 games for the Rockies. In 2000, Perez's third season as Colorado's full-time shortstop, he hit .287 with 10 homers and 71 RBI. He also became the second Rockie to be awarded with a Gold Glove.

Of the three players acquired by the Rockies, Ortiz might be the closest to contributing on the major-league level. He started the season as the A's second baseman before landing on the DL in mid-April with a strained left calf.

At Triple-A Sacramento, Ortiz was batting .273 in 65 games.

Encarnacion has spent the last seven seasons in the Oakland farm system and Belitz appeared in five games last year for the Athletics.

lol, teenweek, i made a trade thread for this very reason. No big deal though,.

Short of my BoSox making a move, which I'm sure they won't (F Dan Duquette), I want to see some major trades go down. Jermaine Dye is a decent outfielder, but I don't think this constitutes a big deal.

It's a significant deal for the entire AL... it blocks all teams from acquiring Giambi, who could have been the difference for some.

Just another observation of insanity.

It sucks for the Yankees who wanted Gimabi and the Mets who wanted Dye.
