I was reading a book written by ted williams where he picked his top 10 hitters of all times. Now being very fascinated by baseballs glorious history this got me thinking. I mean 10 guys great homr run hitters, power hitters, average and contact hitters.

I mean i love basketball and especially boxing and nothing is better than a sweet punch or a 5 punch combo that truns into a knock out. Nothing that is except for a beautiful homerun swing, out of today's players i still love to death junior griffey's swing it is not too powerful but it is so pure that it's beautiful to watch.

Here is my list

1. Babe Ruth
2. Ty Cobb
3. Rogers Hornsby
4. Willie Mays
5. Mickey Mantle
6. Ken Griffey Jr.
7. Ted Williams
8. Lou Gehrig
9. Mark McGwire
10. "Shoeless" Joe Jackson

no matter how cliche ruth was not just a great hitter he set marks in his day that would be equivalent of McGwire hitting 100 homers in a season. In his first year as a yankee he hit more homers than any other team combined he hit 58 homers. In the year Mris broke ruths record for homers in a season Whitey ford broke a record too. Whitey pitched 33 scoreless innings in the world series he beat the previous record of 28 scoreless innings set by none other than babe ruth. The babe was an amazing picther winning 15 games while knocking out almost 30 homers in the same season. When Hank Aaron his number 715 he already had over 2,200 more at bats than ruth had, plus ruth was a pitcher his first 4 years in baseball.

Ty cobb shared or held over 100 baseball records when he retired. He holds a .366 lifetime batting average btw ruth is 3rd on that list with a .342 lifetime avg. Cobb was the former hit king and won the triple crown on several occasions a master ball player.

Rogers hornsby was so feared that he was intentionally walked with the bases loaded in a world series game that started a run which eventually won the game. "Rajah" hit over .400 in 3 out of 4 seasons once and set the record of .424 in a single season.

And the others on the list such as mays and mantle are self explanitory on why i won't go into my fond memories and knowlege you all should know why.

Part of the problem with coming up with a list like this is trying to determine what makes a hitter great. There are a ton of mashers out there, guys who can just muscle the ball out of the park, but I don't think that makes you a great hitter. A hitter should have the right balance of average and power, but I think average should be weighted a little bit more. I think someone asked Ty Cobb once why he didn't hit more homeruns, insinuating he couldn't. Cobb (who grip the bat with his hands apart for more control) slid his hands together and hit 3 bombs the next day. He just didn't think hitting bombs made you a good hitter. I do think there's a place for homerun hitters on the list, but they should be all-around hitters too.

First let me say, Lord Duvious, there is an edit button. (just trying to help)
And I do believe Gonzo stated power AND average.

2nd, Gonzo man, this is tough. You want a list of the greatest hitters, power & average. Although they are some of the best ever, this knocks out guys like Rose and Gwynn. And then to put them in some kind of order. There are some toug choices.
Anyway, here is my list:

1. Mickey Mantle
2. Ted Williams
3. Babe Ruth
4. Jimmie Foxx
5. Ken Griffey Jr.
6. "Shoeless" Joe Jackson
7. Ty Cobb
8. Joe D.
9. Lou Gehrig
10. Willie Mays

Lmao wow dude i am soooo sorry, i did compare you to mickey mantle in the softball thread.

Ok ok ok i am removing mark mcgwire from my list and replacing him with DrunkenGW.

Now drunken GW may not play for any major league team but the finnese he has in belting out homers is almost as sweet as watching griffey jr.'s swing. He can also hit for avg and he has the speed to run out a line drive to right into an inside the park homer. Let's see McGwire do that fuckin roid freak can't do that.

I also agree that yeah it is hard to pick people who can be all around great hitters, just belting homers doesnt makle a great hitter that's why you dont put people like harmon kilebrew or reggie jackson on your list. The babe always hit for avg and hit homers, no matter how out of shape he looked the guy hit doubles and triples as well and was a great outfielder. Amazingly ruth was the outfielder while gehrig was the 1st baseman you'd think it'd be the opposite. But come on ruth is 3rd on the BA list with .342 and 2nd on the HR list witj 714 plus his other records are also unbelievable.

Ty Cobb you don't even have to explain. And i agree just hitting bombs doesnt make you a great hitter, thats why ted williams, cobb, and shoeless joe made y list cause they we're proffesors of hitting.

ok, ive been looking over what all of you have put down as your top 10. It is very hard to put together a list like this because there are different styles of hitting. Any style you want to say, how can someone put Ken Griffey Jr. on this list? Especially over a guy like Ted Williams. If you want sweet swings, why not have Darryl on there lol. Anyway, here is my list, which im sure will be criticized, it is off the top of my head:

1. Babe Ruth
2. Rogers Hornsby
3. Ty Cobb
4. Joe D.
5. Stan Musial
6. Ted Williams
7. Willie Mays
8. Jimmy Foxx
9. Mickey Mantle
10. Mike Schmidt

Close 11th. Pete Rose

This is always a debateable subject but one must consider Rod Carew and George Brett. Gonzo on your list Pete Rose has to be there. Good job with "Shoeless Joe" I am going to watch "Field of Dreams" right now.
