Phils also ship Gomes to Giants for Crespo

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

The New York Mets have traded relievers Turk Wendell and Dennis Cook to the Philadelphia Phillies for left-handed starter Bruce Chen and prospect Adam Walker.

In addition, the Phillies have sent reliever Wayne Gomes to the Giants for outfielder Felipe Crespo.

In another move, the Giants placed first baseman J.T. Snow, who has missed five games since coming down with flu, on the 15-day disabled list with gastroenteritis and called up first baseman Damon Minor from Triple-A Fresno.

Gomes, 28, has led the Phillies in appearances each of the last three seasons. He made 71 appearances in 1998, a career-high 73 in 1999 and 65 last year.

"Wayne Gomes has proven to be one of the league's more durable pitchers and will certainly add quality depth to our bullpen," Giants general manager Brian Sabean said.

A first-round draft pick by Philadelphia in 1993, Gomes is 4-3 for the Phillies this year, with a 4.31 ERA in 42 relief appearances. He has been a closer, setup man and middle reliever in his career, posting a 27-21 record with a 4.42 ERA and 28 saves in 287 outings during five years in the majors.

Crespo, designated for assignment Wednesday when the Giants acquired Andres Galarraga, was hitting .197 with four home runs and 10 RBI in 40 games for San Francisco. He had his best season in 2000, when he hit .290 and tied for the NL lead with 15 pitch hits.

Oh well, I hope he enjoys the view from the penthouse. (almost, maybe the second floor)

I know, I hate to see Turk go. He was one of my favorite Mets. But it's a good trade for them. Cook blows, and it gives them an extra starting pitcher to make a bigger trade with.

This move is going to help the Mets clear some money, and hopefully for the love of God finally sign a hitter next year.

Well its about time we traded some of our higher priced players. If only Phily wouldve taken Zeile and Ordonez too. Oh well, theres still a few days left, maybe we can convince the rockies to take ordonez, since they gave up their shortstop (Nefi Perez)

Ventura's blast sinks Wendell, Phils

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG
NEW YORK (AP) -- Turk Wendell, pitching for Philadelphia one day after being traded by the Mets, gave up a game-winning homer to Robin Ventura in the ninth inning as New York beat the Phillies 4-3 Saturday.

Ventura led off the ninth and hit a 1-0 pitch over the right-field fence for his 18th home run.

Wendell (4-4) and fellow reliever Dennis Cook were sent to the Phillies for minor league pitchers Bruce Chen and Adam Walker after Friday night's game, also won by the Mets.

Philadelphia dropped 1½ games behind first-place Atlanta in the NL East. The Braves played Saturday night at Montreal.

Armando Benitez (4-3) pitched a scoreless ninth for the win.

Philadelphia trailed 3-0 before Tomas Perez homered off Al Leiter with two outs in the sixth and Doug Glanville added an RBI double.

The Phillies tied it in the seventh on an unearned run.

Tsuyoshi Shinjo, inserted for defensive purposes at the start of the inning, dropped a routine fly ball by Pat Burrell to short right field, allowing Bobby Abreu to score the tying run.

Abreu doubled with one out off reliever Jerrod Riggan and stole third.

Phillies starter Omar Daal ran into trouble in the first inning when Todd Zeile doubled with one out, and Mike Piazza walked. Jay Payton and Benny Agbayani delivered two-out RBI singles for a 2-0 Mets lead.

Agbayani made it 3-0 when he led off the fourth with his fifth home run.

After Perez's third homer this season, the Phillies followed with three straight hits.

Former Met Todd Pratt and pinch-hitter Brian Hunter singled before Glanville doubled off the center-field wall to score Pratt. But Leiter struck out Jimmy Rollins to end the inning.

Leiter gave up two runs and 10 hits in six innings. He struck out five and walked one.

Daal allowed three runs on seven hits in five innings.

Game notes
Rollins extended his club-record consecutive stolen base streak to 28 in the fifth with his NL-leading 33rd steal. ... Daal has won once in five starts. ... Pratt, who was hitting .163 with the Mets when they traded him to the Phillies last week, went 3-for-4.

Before you met fans get all misty eyed about losing Turk "I give up game winning homeruns" wendell and Dennis "holy shit i'm still in the league" Cook, think about this. Yes, these guys were decent for you, much like benitez. However that 10% of the time when they blew it always was in big games. F'em.
