ASHBURN, Va. -- Seven-time Pro Bowl cornerback Deion Sanders retired from the NFL on Friday, two days before he was due to report to the Washington Redskins' training camp.

"In my discussions with (Sanders' agent) Eugene Parker, it was evident from his comments that Deion Sanders did not want to play football," coach Marty Schottenheimer told The Associated Press.

"With that understanding, both parties have reached a mutually beneficial agreement. Deion Sanders will retire as a National Football League player, and a financial agreement has been reached."

Sanders, 33, informed the Redskins of his decision through agent Eugene Parker, the sources said. The seven-time Pro Bowl performer, regarded by many as the premier coverage defender in NFL history, intends to file his official retirement papers with the league.

Sanders and the Redskins agreed on a settlement that will allow him to keep all but $500,000 of the $8 million signing bonus he received as part of the seven-year, $56 million contract that he signed with the team last summer. He had already received $5.5 million of the bonus, and was due another $2.5 million this year. Sanders had previously said that he didn't want to play for the Redskins this season.

The two sides agreed to delay that payment until next March, with Sanders now set to get $2 million of the original $2.5 million.

The decision came less than one full day after Sanders cleaned out his locker with the baseball Syracuse SkyChiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays. Published reports claimed that Sanders, who departed the club after autographing memorabilia for Syracuse players, told his baseball teammates he was resigned to report to the Washington training camp.

Sanders' football contract stipulated that Sanders report to camp unless he was on a major league baseball roster when the summer workouts began.

Sanders played 29 games for the Cincinnati Reds this season but was released on July 17 after hitting just .173.

The Toronto Blue Jays signed him to a minor league contract and sent him to Syracuse of the Triple-A International League. He cleared out his locker Thursday and left to apparently contemplate his future.

Material from The Associated Press was used in this report.

I guarantee by about Week 7 or 8, Deion will be looking to get back in the NFL. He just wants no part of 2 a days at Training Camp.

Good point. You can't take any athlete's retirement announcement seriously anymore. Now Cris Carter is unsure about his original retirement announcement just as I predicted. Feh...

Deion sucks now...end of story. Retiring is the best thing he could do, although if hes like reggie white, he'll come back when God tells him to while hes taking a shit in his bathroom.

Despite the two Superbowl rings and World Series appearances, Deion never fulfilled his promise simply because he was in it for the money.

The only exception would be when he won the Superbowl with the Niners in '94 and when he had the highest batting average of any player in the World Series about the same time... of course, that was SEVEN years ago.

I see it as poetic justice that Jerry Jones and Daniel Snyder got it HARD in DAS DOOMPER from Deion, who had obviously peaked athletically and could not keep up the two sports beyond age 26.

I am sure he will cry all the way to his helipad on top of the bank.

Deion who? Man he was so 3 years ago. He had one good season in baseball with the Braves and the only reason why he has two SB rings is because he was on teams that were packed with stars and egos.

How good were the Falcons when he was the only notable player 10 years ago?

As much as i hate deion, you can say that about half the guys who win superbowls. Ill give him some credit, he did have some great talent in his prime. He didnt have the best numbers of all time, but thats because teams never threw to his side of the field. I hate the son of a bitch, but he was damn good.

I hate the man, but its hard to argue the fact that he might have been the greatest cover corner in football history. It didn't matter who he was playing for, he made the opponent change his strategy ever time he stepped on the field. But he's an arrogant asshole, and as a non-Skins fan living in Skins territory, I'm glad to see his pin-stripe sportin, dew-rag wearin, money-grubbin ass go.

Personally, I'm sad to see him go (If he really does). The guy was hilarious. Arrogant, yes. Asshole, possibly. One of the most charismatic and interesting athletes of our era, No Doubt!

He was the type of guy you hated until he was on your team. I know, because I hated him with a passion until he signed with the Cowboys.
