Moss to sign five-year deal worth $7.1M

New York Jets first-round pick Santana Moss, one of the most electrifying offensive prospects in the 2001 draft, early Saturday morning reached agreement on his first NFL contract.

Moss, the 16th pick in the first round out of the University of Miami, will sign a five-year, $7.1 million contract. The deal negotiated by agent Drew Rosenhaus includes a signing bonus of $3.433 million and a guaranteed option payment of $1.5547 million next spring. Moss will also receive a $200,000 report bonus when he checks into training camp Saturday evening.

There is a $900,000 base salary escalator and potential Pro Bowl bonuses of $500,000. Moss can also earn a total of $900,000 in incentives from 2001-2004.

The mighty mite receiver (5-foot-9½, 181 pounds) is expected to add the big-play dimension the New York passing game has lacked for several seasons. Rookie head coach Herm Edwards had targeted Moss as his most coveted player weeks before the draft, and the former Hurricanes star was the fourth wideout taken in the first round.

"I see everyone coming in and competing for a starting job, and he's no exception," Edwards said. "When I was a player, I wanted someone behind me, pushing me to be better."

Moss, 22, is a fearless receiver with good run-after-catch ability and he usually plays bigger than his size. He has a 42-inch vertical jump, and the Big East player of the year possesses the second gear scouts love and which allows him to gain separation from defenders.

He played all four seasons at Miami, appearing in 41 games and starting 31 of them. Moss had 143 receptions for 2,546 yards and 19 touchdowns. He also returned 16 kickoffs for 375 yards, ran back 77 punts for 1,195 yards and even had 12 rushes for 277 yards.

The Jets will provide Moss the opportunity to start as a rookie and he could also land punt return duties.

"We've gotten faster and younger," quarterback Vinny Testaverde said. "Teams are going to have to deal with him as a returner and as an offensive weapon. We're going to see a lot of him on the field."

its good that the jets have him for training camp...but the guy hasnt played a down of NFL football and he gets 7.1 million bucks. I just dont like that fact, but then again, why wouldnt he take it if that is what he is offered? Cant blame him.

Its the begining of a new era, one started by a rookie, a rookie who is short, a rookie is getting paid 7.1 million. I wished I was gifted like these athletes so I can make the big bucks before I step on the field.

Moss will not be the next Keyshawn, even if he is, Moss will skip town like he did and choke on another team.

Right but he is not supposed to be the next Keyshawn..He is not 6'3 200 something...He is here to be a speed player and to return punts..Matthew Hatchette is the player who has been brought in to be a Keyshawn type, though obvi he is not as good a player...But this receiving corp is a hell of alot better then last year
