PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Pirates traded right-hander pitcher Jason Schmidt and outfielder John Vander Wal to the San Francisco Giants on Monday for outfielder Armando Rios and a minor-league prospect.

The Giants (57-49), four games behind division-leading Los Angeles (61-45) and third in the NL West, made the trade one day before the deadline to make deals without having to put players on waivers first.

The Pirates, whose 41-63 record ties Cincinnati for the worst in the National League, was widely expected to trade the pair before the deadline.

In addition to Rios, 29, the Pirates also acquire right-hander Ryan Vogelsong.

"This is a trade designed to help us both now and in the future," Pirates general manager Dave Littlefield said. "In Armando Rios, we are getting a younger right fielder who is talented and has played well for the Giants this season."

The Giants have been looking to add another solid starter to their rotation since spring training. They weren't afraid to move Rios, who has decent power (14 HRs, 49 RBI) but is hitting just .218 with three homers at Pacific Bell Park -- not the numbers Giants manager Dusty Baker expects from his No. 5 hitter.

While San Francisco liked Vogelsong's potential, he was shelled regularly during his stint in the Giants bullpen this season. Meanwhile, Schmidt is a proven winner. Vander Wal will essentially take Rios' spot in the Giants lineup as the everyday right fielder.

Schmidt, 28, is 6-6 with a 4.61 ERA in 14 starts and is eligible for free agency after the season. He was acquired from Atlanta in 1996 and is 44-47 with a 4.39 ERA in his major league career.

In his past four starts, Schmidt has 30 strikeouts in 30 innings.

Vander Wal, 35, was acquired by the Pirates from San Diego before the 2000 season and hit .290 with 35 homers and 144 RBI in 1½ seasons with Pittsburgh. He is batting .278 this year with 11 homers and 50 RBI.

With no prospects of making a run at the playoffs, the Pirates were expected to trim their payroll and wanted to get value for Schmidt before he became a free agent. Schmidt is making $3.2 million this year, and Vander Wal gets $1.55 million in both 2001 and 2002.

Schmidt is expected to be replaced in the Pirates rotation by Mike Lincoln, a right-handed relief pitcher.

Lincoln has pitched 17 innings in 12 games for the Pirates. He has a 1.59 ERA, with nine strikeouts, 15 hits and three earned runs. His first start would most likely be Wednesday in San Francisco, where Baker said he could face Schmidt.

Rios, who makes $310,000, hit .259 in 93 games with the Giants this year. In parts of four seasons in San Francisco, Rios hit .279 with 33 homers and 131 RBI.

Vander Wal is expected to be replaced in right field by Rios.

"I've always liked him," Pirates manager Lloyd McClendon said. "He does a lot of things well. I think he will be a good fit in our lineup."

Vogelsong, 24, has made 13 relief appearances with the Giants this season, going 0-3 with a 5.65 ERA. He also was 3-3 with a 2.79 ERA in 10 starts with Triple-A Fresno.

Vogelsong will be sent to Triple-A Nashville to build up his pitching strength, and the Pirates hope to make him a starter.

Vogelsong makes $200,000, the major-league minimum. He has ties to Pennsylvania, having attended Octorara High School in Atglen, Chester County, and Kutztown State.

It has been a turbulent season for the Pirates as they began play in PNC Park, which replaced Three Rivers Stadium. This month, the team hired Littlefield as general manager after Cam Bonifay was fired after eight seasons in Pittsburgh.

Schmidt was part of a Pirates pitching staff decimated by injuries.

Kris Benson, who needed elbow surgery, probably won't be back until the middle of next year, and Francisco Cordova, who hasn't pitched in nearly a year, may require reconstructive elbow surgery. Schmidt missed almost a year with a shoulder injury.
