Irvin arraigned in drug case

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

DENTON, Texas -- Former Dallas Cowboys receiver Michael Irvin entered an innocent plea Monday for a felony charge of possessing less than a gram of cocaine that resulted in his arrest almost a year ago.

If convicted on the felony possession charge, Irvin could face six months to two years in jail and up to a $10,000 fine.

"I don't know anything about it," Irvin said outside the courthouse.

Attorney Peter Ginsberg said after the brief court appearance that his office is conducting its own investigation of the charges and will give the results to the judge. He said he hopes the case will not go to trial.

The charge stems from Irvin's Aug. 9 arrest at a North Dallas apartment where law officers said they found marijuana and ecstasy pills. Less than two months earlier, Irvin had completed probation on a no-contest plea to felony cocaine possession.

Irvin was not charged after the arrest. He was indicted 10 months later.

Ginsberg said Irvin was arrested on one charge and is being prosecuted on another charge. He said he also was concerned about the delay in the indictment.

"I'm deeply disturbed by the way Michael has been treated by law enforcement. There's definitely something wrong with the charges," Ginsberg said.

Assistant District Attorney Lee Ann Breading has said her office didn't receive the case until February, and further investigation and additional laboratory testing took several additional months. She also said a key Plano officer involved in the investigation was injured in a motorcycle accident in March and wasn't available until June.

The case evolved after officers with the Collin-Denton County Drug Task Force, of which the FBI is a part, attempted to arrest Rhonda Adaham on a federal warrant at her apartment.

Adaham was not there, but her sister, Nelly Adaham, and Irvin were found and arrested. Nelly Adaham was indicted also on the same charge as Irvin, but Rhonda Adaham was not indicted.

"Michael is trying to move into the next stage of his life after football," Ginsberg said Monday. "This has been devastating to him emotionally."

Ginsberg also said that Irvin was looking at the possibility of a career in broadcasting and has been spending time with his wife and children.

Irvin, who retired in July 2000 and was hired for Fox Sports Net's Sunday pregame show, insisted he was in the wrong place at the wrong time and the drugs were not his. A few weeks later, Fox announced that Irvin would not be an analyst for the network.

Breading said after Irvin was indicted that she expected prosecutors to recommend jail time rather than probation because of Irvin's previous offenses.

In 1996, Irvin pleaded no contest to felony cocaine possession in exchange for four years of deferred probation, a $10,000 fine and dismissal of misdemeanor marijuana possession charges.

The NFL suspended Irvin for five games. He finished his deferred probation on the charge just before he announced his retirement.

He was a member of three Super Bowl champion teams with the Cowboys and established himself over 12 seasons as one of the NFL's best receivers.

Irvin's not the only one in trouble

Lawrence Taylor is behind in child-support payments because his income is not what it used to be, his lawyer said after the former Giants star was arrested in a roundup of deadbeat parents.

Taylor spent about 10 hours in jail and was released when a business associate paid $6,000 -- $4,500 for an overdue payment and $1,500 for an outstanding traffic violation in Atlantic City.

The retired linebacker was alone at his Upper Saddle River home watching television when officers arrested him at 2 a.m. Tuesday, acting Bergen County Sheriff Jay Alpert said. Taylor was among 52 people arrested in the sweep.

Taylor owed the money to support a 7-year-old son who lives in New Jersey. He also pays $50,000 a year to former wife Deborah and their three children, who live in North Carolina, and $1,000 a month to another child in an "informal, private" arrangement, said his lawyer, Thomas Melani.

"He's just not making the money he was making before," Melani said.

In his last year in football in 1993, Taylor earned about $1 million in salary and more money off the field.

Melani estimated that Taylor now earns between $50,000 and $100,000 a year selling memorabilia on home shopping channels and making personal appearances. He is a part-owner of Container Packaging Corp. in Paterson, a cardboard-box company, Melani said.

He said Taylor missed support payments because he believed the money would be deducted from his earnings at the box company. Melani said the paperwork for the deductions somehow was not continued into 1998 after the last such payment in December.

Melani said Taylor failed to pay up despite a warning last week.

"L.T. has a habit of not following up on things until later," Melani said. "It's an embarrassment for him to be arrested and put in jail."

The arrest was the latest in a series of legal troubles for Taylor, who led the Giants to two Super Bowl titles and played in 10 Pro Bowls.

He pleaded guilty last summer to filing a false 1990 federal income tax return by failing to report $48,000 in income from a now-closed restaurant, L.T. Sports Pub in East Rutherford.

In May 1996, he was arrested in South Carolina on charges he tried to buy crack cocaine. That same year, Bergen County authorities applied for an arrest warrant after he failed to pay more than $50,000 for his three children in North Carolina.

"He's had nothing but headaches since his retirement from professional football," Melani said Wednesday. "At one time he was doing relatively well. Now he's trying to make ends meet."

The best part about Michael Irvin was his wardrobe. How could he not be mistaken for a lowlife when he dressed up like a pimp from the '70's.

Remember the one Giant's game where he was on the sideline injured and he wore a tacky yellow suit, and those sunglasses with gold plates on the temples?

I am still trying to find a highlight where Michael Irvin was a "standout" receiver. Maybe it was while the Cowboys were building their dynasty and, when they started winning titles, Irvin was merely a deterrent.

Either way, the man thought he was above the law and has been brought down pretty hard.

As for L.T., it is like hearing about a beloved family member, so I want to leave it alone. If I could pay him enough money to just be L.T., I would. The man gave his life to the Giants fans and deserves better.

Narrator: "I STILL can't think of anything."
Tyler: "Flashback humor, how amusing."
