Canseco promises homer, delivers two

Jose Canseco outdid even Babe Ruth.

In a Bambinolike performance, Canseco told four young cancer patients he hoped to homer for them Wednesday night, then hit two, leading the Chicago White Sox to a 7-6 win over the Kansas City Royals.

``I said hopefully I can hit a couple home runs for you guys. But I also said, 'If I don't, watch batting practice because I'll probably hit a couple out in batting practice,''' Canseco said.

On Cancer Survivors Night, 450 patients and their families turned out at Comiskey Park. The children, two boys and two girls, were standing near the on-deck circle during batting practice, meeting the players and getting their autographs.

Canseco wasn't trying to be Ruth, who reportedly once called a home run for a sick child. But he performed like him.

Canseco hit a three-run homer in the first off Chris George (0-2) and a two-run shot in the third. Told about Canseco's talk with the kids, teammate Ray Durham's eyes widened in disbelief.

``That's pretty impressive,'' Durham said, shaking his head. ``If I said that and went out there, I think I'd be 0-for-4, 0-for-5.''

Canseco's 454 career home runs moved him past Carl Yastrzemski (452) for 22nd in baseball history. The five RBIs gave Canseco a total of 1,378, passing Johnny Bench for 57th on the career chart.

It's going to be real interesting to see how the hall of fame voting goes on this guy.

I did research for a preseason article on Canseco, right after he was cut by the Angels, and what I found AMAZED me.

Games missed over 15 year career (not including 1985): 648

Then I figured if he would have averaged 155 games a year, these would have been his career numbers coming into the 2001 season:

Homeruns: 614 (ranked 4th all time)
RBI: 1863 (10th all time)
Runs: 1567 (43rd all time)
Hits: 2490 (77th all time)
SB: 269

In the words of Lorenzo Anello (DeNiro)... The worst thing in this world is wasted talent

Just another observation of insanity.

WOW, its amazing to see what he could've done if he hadn't missed all those games.

he still has a chance to make the hall though. he is 22nd on the all-time home run list, and is 56th (i think) on the all-time rbi list.

He might not be a first-ballot hall of famer, but he is going to make it regardless. It doesnt matter if you are a first ballot or tenth ballot hall of famer, once youre in, youre in for life.

That is interesting about his numbers if he can squeeze out a couple of more years he can break 500 hr's then he's a lock for the Hall. I personally think he should go in eventually anyway.

Ive been sayin ever since he had back surgey a few years ago that hes been robbed off playing. i mean when he was on tampa and playin everyday he had 44 homeruns the same year that McWire had 70 homeruns, then a disc got messed up in his back and he was done the rest of the season, hes been robbed of playing time ever since. And its pissed me off that he doesnt get played anymore.
