Tigers tie modern record with 13-run ninth

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- Damion Easley could hardly believe what he was seeing once the Detroit Tigers erupted.

The Tigers tied a modern major league record by scoring 13 runs in the ninth inning, and Easley got six hits to match the club mark last done by Ty Cobb in a 19-6 trouncing of Texas on Wednesday night.

"You've got to be in awe just watching it," said Easley, who has hits in seven of his last eight at-bats and is 16-for-32 against Texas this season. "I've never seen anything like it. I felt good tonight and got some pitches I could hit."

The Tigers equaled the post-1900 record for the most runs in a ninth inning. The California Angels did it against Texas on Sept. 14, 1978. The Tigers also matched their club record for runs in any inning set in the sixth inning on June 17, 1925 against the New York Yankees.

Shane Halter hit a grand slam and an RBI double, Randall Simon had a bases-loaded triple and Deivi Cruz homered in the big inning.

Easley went 6-for-6, including a home run. Cobb had six hits on May 25, 1925, and Bill Nance accomplished the feat on July 13, 1901.

Simon also homered in finishing with five RBI.

The Tigers went six straight games last week when they scored exactly one run, tying a major league mark.

But Detroit sent 17 batters to the plate and had six extra-base hits against three Texas pitchers in the ninth.

"Last week we couldn't get more than one run and tonight we get 13 in one inning," said Tigers manager Phil Garner. "I can't explain it, but I did enjoy it."

Detroit improved to 8-0 against the Rangers this season.

With the score 6-all, Rob Fick was hit by a pitch from Mike Venafro (4-4) leading off the Detroit ninth. Bobby Higginson followed with a double to left and Tony Clark was intentionally walked to load the bases.

Simon followed with his bases-clearing triple. Halter doubled home a run and scored on Easley's single for an 11-6 lead.

"Simon's triple really got us going," said Easley. "That was the big hit. That gave us the lead."

Cruz had a two-run homer off Brandon Villafuerte and RBI singles by pinch-hitter Ryan Jackson and Simon made it 15-6. Halter followed with his grand slam.

Venafro was the loser for the second consecutive night. He failed to retire 10 batters over the two games against the Tigers. His ERA rose from 2.63 to 4.61 over that span.

Venafro had been the Rangers' most effective reliever recently before faltering in the two straight games.

"It's no mystery that I didn't pitch well and that's why I got beat up the last two days," said Venafro. "It's very disappointing for me."

Danny Patterson (5-3) got one out and the victory.

Alex Rodriguez went 4-for-5 and Rafael Palmeiro was 3-for-5 for the Rangers, who lost their sixth straight to match their longest losing streak of the season.

Both starters -- Texas' Joaquin Benoit and Detroit's Nate Cornejo -- were making their major league debuts, and neither lasted past the fifth inning.

The matchup marked the first time both starting pitchers made their big league debuts since Aug. 21, 1990, when Paul Abbott of the Minnesota Twins faced Jim Campbell of the Kansas City Royals.

Cornejo left after three innings and his team trailing 6-2.

But the Tigers rallied and when Benoit left after five innings, it was tied at 6.

Rodriguez collected his 99th RBI of the season, tying the club record for shortstops. Kevin Elster drove in 99 runs for the Rangers in 1996.

Fick's solo homer in the third pulled the Tigers within 4-2, but Frank Catalanotto's two-run double in the third extended the Rangers' lead to 6-2.

Detroit tied it at 6 with a three-run fifth as Simon hit a solo homer and Easley had a two-run shot.

Game notes
When Randy Velarde was hit by Cornejo's pitch in the second, it marked the 51st time a Ranger had been hit by a pitch this season, a team record. ... Palmeiro snapped an 0-for-17 slump with a first-inning single. ... Cornejo became the ninth player and fifth pitcher to make his first major league appearance for the Tigers this season. ... Simon hit his first major league homer since Sept. 4, 1999, while a member of the Atlanta Braves.

i think the more amazing thing might be that Damian Easley went 6 for 6 in 9 innings of play. Tha is incredibly hard to do.
