HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) -- While 300-pound men gathered around to watch, five slightly smaller women kicked footballs through goalposts.

The women weren't exactly sports novices. Tiffeny Milbrett, the best player in the world last year, and four of her New York Power teammates enlivened Thursday's late practice session of the New York Jets.

``It's great to have the Power associated with the Jets,'' said Milbrett, the leading scorer in the WUSA. The Power train across the street from the Jets' headquarters at Hofstra University. ``You grow up watching football and to have the chance to meet the players and be around the team like this is great for us.''

New Jets general manager Terry Bradway was with Kansas City last year when the Chiefs invited Mia Hamm to kick field goals. She sent one through the uprights from 50 yards with her right foot, then booted a 30-yarder with her left.

``They're great athletes and it's a real treat to watch them,'' said Bradway, whose daughter Jenny, 12 and a local soccer player, joined the women on the field.

Milbrett, Norwegian star Gro Espeseth and Americans Sara Whalen, Nel Fettig and Ronnie Fair began kicking from 20 yards and easily converted their kicks.

They also were good from 25. But at 35 yards, Milbrett hit the upright. Only Fair and Espeseth converted from that distance.

Several Jets were impressed with the kicking exhibition. Tackle Jason Fabini, who grew up in Fort Lee, N.J., as did Fettig, stopped to take a photo with her. They discovered that they attended high school at the same time, although at different schools.

Jets owner Woody Johnson also spoke with the WUSA players, who explained the difference in soccer kicks and football kicks.

``You want to kick it low in soccer and you have to kick all of them high in football,'' Milbrett said. ``We'd probably get a lot of them blocked here.''

The exhibition was a welcome relief for most of the Jets, who got a break from temperatures in the high 90s and high humidity. Fabini and his fellow offensive linemen were relaxing in the shade while the special teams were practicing, but they walked to midfield to watch the women kick.

Each of the women wore green Jets jerseys with their names on them, except for Fair. She donned a jersey intended for U.S. national team defender Christie Pearce, who injured her knee last week and will undergo reconstructive surgery later this month.

``This is as close as we'll get to the NFL,'' Milbrett said with a laugh. ``We want people to be able to root for the home teams, the Jets and the Power.''
