Rule #1 in finding a good cheesesteak. If they call it a 'Philly' cheesesteak. It isn't one.

Rule #2

Look for amoroso's boxes in the back of the establishments. Not mandatory, but it will certainly add to the experience.

Rule #3 If the guy running the place is a fat hairy guy in a sweaty wifebeater your chances at a good cheesesteak are greatly improved.

Rule #4

If the brown bag carrying the sandwiches has grease spots by the time you walk out the door, chances are your cheesesteak will be acceptable.

Well with my discussion of college day 'sub' establishments keep in mind I was in Indiana. Jersey Mike's was the closest to come to a sub. Hell I actually called them subs. Their cheesesteaks blew though.

Opening up a Subway in my area is like opening an Olive Garden. It still amazes me that the Olive Garden stays in business when you have so many great privately owned reasonably priced Italian restaurants of varying degrees (casual to formal) around here.

Its the bread sticks. They put heroin in them.

i never trusted the colonel with his wee beady eyes.

ok ok......I've had EHNOOF! They are Hoagies! A Hoagie placed in an oven is a Grinder. Philly is indeed the mecca of great for that is horrible for you, but you only live twice.

I live about 7 minutes out of Philly on the Jersey side. We actually have great hoagie, pizza, and cheesesteak places on this side of the Delaware. These aren't better than Philly's best places, but they more than hold their own while in such company:

Gaetano's - Rt 130 North in Cinnaminson, NJ. Hoagies and Cheesesteaks that are just massive, and reasonably priced. Excellent components.

Meadowbrook Food Market - Union Ave and Githens Ave in Pennsauken, NJ. Sandwiches to die for. Sarcone's bread brought in from Philly daily, and almost a waiting list to get a sandwich on the stuff. A "half" portion is enough to clog an artery.

Joe's Pizza - Wisteria Ave and Clayton Ave (Right near the Courier-Post News Paper building) Cherry Hill, NJ. Any place where you walk in and the people treat you like a king is alright by me. The Prices on the menu never stand up, because after a little small talk the guy always lops off a buck or 2 from everything. Pizza is stellar.

The Yellow Submarine - Forklanding Rd. Maple Shade, NJ. Cheesesteaks and Hoagies, nice.

Vincent's - Park Ave. Merchantville, NJ. The original home and patent holder of the Panzarotti. Quality of the ltasty dough pockets of artery cement has slipped somewhat in recent years, but still a good eat.

For 95% of the people on this board this post was awful. People who live in the area though should give a few of these places a try though, they're less expensive and just as good as your favorite places in Philly.

The words hoagie and sub are actually interchangeable for me. I couldn't tell you which one I use more. Does this make me a bad person?

if you say hoagie or grinder, you're a fag
