HELP! My cable modem is running slower than dialup! - Goatweed - 05-20-2004

I recommend you remove nortons firewall, it's not exactly friendly and can be buggy.

I would remove NIS totally and use Zonealarm - the free version, there isn't mch difference between that and the $40 one.

Of course, if you're behind a router you don't need to use a software firewall if your router has NAT enabled - mine does, but I'm paranoid so I run Zonealarm also.

Norton's AntiVirus is good, the rest of their products tend to really suck tho (SystemWorks is ok, but there's better stuff out now).

Can I find this at download.com?

At home, no router.

So let's see...

SpyBot - check
Ad-Aware - check
Spyware Guard - check
Zonealarm - to do

Ugh.

zonealarm is at <a href="http://www.zonelabs.com", target="_blank">zonelabs.com</a> - make sure you get the free one.

The spybots/adawares/etc. are good for getting rid of spyware, but Ive only seen a few cases where apywareware brought a system down to serious sluggishness - Im not saying that cant be the case with you, it could, but since you said by killing NIS that the speed comes back, that tells me it's Norton's.

I still like their Anti-virus stuff, but theirs (and McAfee's) firewall/security/spayware applications are, IMO, shit.

You might wanna consider a router at home too, just for the hardware firewall alone, it's worth it and the one I use (Linysys BFRS41) can be found for <$40 at most retail stores - plus you can network your place up at some point.
