my wife did that mystic tan thing and it turned out to not look fake at all. Just make sure to follow the instructions TO THE LETTER and it will turn out ok.

The only real way to get a good tan is to spend considerable amount of time in the sun. This, obviously, isn't feasible for everyone.

i would suggest getting outdoors more often.
