The woman suffered third degree burns because she was wearing polyester pants and was "too embarassed" to removed said pants after she spilled coffee on herself. She CHOOSE the pain of the hot liquid burning her skin over the pain of embarassment of people seeing her remove her pants, which was in an unhealthy state. She made the illogical choice and society is rewarding her for her vainity.
