This appeared on page six of the New
York Post: January 30, 2004 -- BAR and nightclub owners are in an uproar over a proposal that would require a "nightlife license" to stay open after1 a.m. City Consumer Affairs Commissioner Gretchen Dykstra is pushing a plan that would require a special two-year license for any nightspot with a capacity of 75 or more where the music would be 90 decibels or higher. A place would be padlocked for up to 10 days after three noise or other license violations. David Rabin, president of the New York Nightlife Assn. and co-owner of Lotus, says Dykstra's plan would let the city effectively shut bars and nightclubs down at 1 a.m. "This bill will end up closing New York at 1 a.m.," Rabin warned. "It's no longer going to be the city that never sleeps. We're united on this - everyone from the little bars to the biggest nightclubs. The best-run bar in the universe could not stay open under the conditions in this proposal." Please take a moment and go to the link below and send Gretchen Dykstra a message in regard to this issue: Please file a complaint under "Opinions on NYC Cabaret Laws"

Granted, that early in the morning, you gotta wait for a while, but at least you know there will eventually be one to stumble your drunk ass onto. Seriously, though, goddamn it, we are "The city that never <b>sleeps</b>"... so why the fucking early curfew? Or even the <i>threat</i> of early curfew for large establishments? The very idea of creating yet another license that places have to keep track of for constant renewal reeks of the city attempting to make such businesses feel inconvenienced enough to shut down of their own accord. Either that, or screw up on one of the licenses, and give the city free rein to shut them down.

It's a residential thing.

That's understandable, but what exactly do they expect to happen when the residents are left with absolutely nothing worthwhile to do?
Damn it, we can't keep trying to achieve some puritanical utopia; such a place will never exist. We need some form of vice every now and again to maintain our sanity. You know what occurs when all measures of decadence are eliminated? Look at what the Taliban was running in Afghanistan; it became under their rule a country where even singing was forbidden. They were a joyless people, which made them easy fodder for any fanatic with a death wish or two to come in and manipulate them. Is that what they want to duplicate in <i>this</i> country?

I'd say that's a tad extreme.

Bars and clubs already need a liquor and cabaret license.
Under this proposal, most bars would only need a liquor license and the big places would have to get the night license. The requirements for it aren't draconian or utopian. Provide soundproofing/resistance, security, and avoid being a nuisance to your neighbors. Instead of reading people's "outraged" opinions, read the proposal.
