Welcome to the land of equality

Recently at work they have been hiring a LOT of people who don't speak any english at all, most of them spanish. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with people speaking other languages around me but when that is all you can speak I think that they should not be hired. When I need to communicate with my co-workers and I can't because I can't speak spanish, there is something wrong. Worst case senario it could be a danger to me. Im not thinking to that extreme though, when I say to someone "They need that pallet in stationary." I expect them to understand and not to just look at me blankly and continue to do what they do. It gets rather frustrating when I am supposed to train someone who does not understand a word I am saying.

Anyone have similar problems in their work place?
Comments?

educate yourself either on the job adn advance or go back to school.

leave the grunt work to the illegal immigrants.

it's that simple, really.

oh, and have you discussed this issue (a VERY fair one to have I might add...) with your supervisor? if so, what did they say?

On a serious note.

Couldn't you just learn basic Spanish?

Commands, questions, etc.

me starting the same thread on both boards is nothing new. i just love how different one thread can go from the other. i am unoriginal andonly have ideas for a new thread once in a blue moon, so deal with it.

Yeah, I have a comment to this. Where do we live again? We're the ones who are supposed to learn a different language to make it easier for them? Fuck that!

Oh, and Amy, I hear ya girl. I've had to work with plenty of non-English speaking workers in the past. While some of them do work well, it's still impossible to communicate with them. In the time it takes to actually get the point across, you could have taken care of it yourself.

I don't have the time to get into a discussion on this but i will say that you are being just as ignorant as some of these people.(presuming that they are not learning how to speak English by choice)
