Who makes the band what it is?

such as audioslave... it is chris cornell singing, and if you listen to the songs, for a lot of them you would think you are listening to a softer soundgarden song.. yeah, tom morello has a guitar presence that is easily defined, but it still sounds a lot like soundgarden because of Chris Cornell's voice

I think in some respects there is a difference. A good example is "Like a Stone" The solo is all Tom Morello. Look past his political leanings and you can tell the guy is an awesome guitar player. There is one other song that sounds like Soundgarden that I have heard(don't own the album) where they distort Cornells voice at the end, and you could swear it's Soundgarden. So I am kinda agreeing with you on that point. Still have no idea why those guys called it quits.
