Spyware was mentioned earlier in the thread, and I've found that a combination of 3 programs is needed to really keep spyware oot.

Spybot Search and Destroy is a cheeky little program that works very well. It helps block potential spyware from getting on your PC, and removes what slipped through the cracks. A MUST:

Spybot: Search and Destroy

SpywareGuard blocks spyware from getting on your PC and looks for the trademarks of apyware working. It alerts you when it find something. Supplemental to Spybot and Adaware:

SpywareGuard

Adaware works just like Spybot. Another essential because none of the 3 programs are very effective alone. use the combination of the 3 to be certain.

Ad-Aware

This has probably been posted before, but useful info that can't hurt.

Okay, but how does that explain why my firewall all of a sudden started making everything run slow?

I'm confused!! Okay, so you know my name, and obviously I've been having some computer issues. Now what?

It was me, all the time. Commander Chaos!! ha ha ha. I unleashed these computer problems upon you so that I could learn your name, SNN, and shoe size in a identity theft or stalker master plan. I unleashed my first wave to learn your first name. I was planning on the second attack to learn your last name, but I forgot your first name, so I launched my computer trebuchette. Soon I will own your underwear, either new purchase with your credit card, or the actual streched faded and frayed stuff.....

Do you know what. References/Inside Jokes lose their funney when you have to explain them..... even if it only was funney to me.

I was thinking more along the lines of "I just sold my panties to a geek."

In a word, maybe. Spyware is sneaky little shit that records the types of websites you visit, where you live, and the such and then sends it out to a central "hub" that collects a buttload of marketing info on all of us. "So?"....so it uses your upload bandwidth to accomplish this, And it's just about always trying to connect to the hub to report on you.

That means it's an outgoing connection that is probably confusing the dog shit out of your firewall. Spyware is notorious for bogging down not only connection speeds, but the loading time of applications, etc. It whores up whatever resources it can get to. If you surf the web regularly, and have never had a program that rids you of spyware, your PC is teeming with hundreds of little spyware programs sucking your resources dry.

As for the firewall going Nazi on you, that's probably spyware trying to send it's information out of ports that are generally "open" (for example the ports that AIM, a web browser, popular games, etc all utilize.) . Your firewall sees that the port is being used but the data isn't coming from the program it should be coming from. So it slams the door shut on that port, causing the legit program to either not work or work very poorly.

Ask anyone who works in IT, spyware is the root of more evils now than Microsoft!

Amen.

Okay, so I downloaded the three softwares that EffinC suggested. I actually had SpyBot until recently. I ran all the scans and then tried to turn the firewall back on. It slowed everything down again. I shut the firewall off again and tried to access Norton's support. It seems my version of Norton Internet Security is no longer supported by them (it's NIS 2002) and gee, would I like to upgrade?

How dangerous is it to have no firewall running?
