From what I have read about him, he was a decent and actually very good person but he never should have been president. But sleeper brought up a great one that completely slipped my mind, James Buchanan. He presided over the secession of most of the southern states, he has to be the worst ever. Buchanan wanted Kansas admitted as a slave state, despite the fraudulent nature of the “elections” that the repugnant Missourian David Atchison and other thugs had foisted upon that territory. The events in Kansas convinced many Northerners that the Democrats were incapable of settling the slave issue in a way that Northerners could stomach. Later, when states began to secede, Buchanan said he didn’t believe states had that right but that the Federal government was powerless to do anything about it. Therefore, Buchanan’s policies toward Kansas did the most to bring about the Civil War and his inaction when states began to secede, despite his vehement insistence that states could not secede, only solidifies his position as the worst president ever.

Franklin Pierce is also a close 2nd.

2. Franklin Pierce
3. Ulysess Grant
4. Warren Harding
5. Ronald Reagan

reagan isn't the greatest president ever but he's by far not the worst. yes, he brought about the defeat of the soviet threat. no he didn't kiss their ass and tippy toe around their feelings like presidents before and after him did.

yes, he targeted the silly tax code aimed at punishing those who worked and succeeded, instead rewarding the unmotivated and lazy.

he got our hostages returned from iran without starting a war. something most liberals would love today.

he kicked the shit out of Khadaffi, nipping his building attitude in the bud. has libya been a thorn in our side since? no. why? because reagan didn't fuck around. he took out 30 libyans, one of which was khaddaff's adoptive daughter..

reagan was barely conscious while he was in office. most presidents are figureheads, so the best presidents take credit for the great things that happen to take place while they're in office. its more about being in the right place at the right time than being responsible for much of it.

That's somewhat true, there are many things that are out of anyones control and when its good the president takes credit and the opposite when its bad, he gets blamed.

Though that doesn't mean a president is simply a figurehead, presidents are far from that. There have been many presidents who have influenced not just the country during their terms but changed the country forever. There have been many who have done nothing, and many who have done a lot of harm. But there are many circumstances surrounding that as well, the climate of the country, the current members of the house and senate, etc, etc.

But I have never bought into the argument of "figure heads" and that a president has no real power, lets look at the current dope in office and the havoc he has wreaked over the last 5+ years.

that is true, i think some presidents are more influential than others, in bushes case, he puts people in place from his inner circle who are not going to add another dimension to the administration. they're all part of the same cabal looking to destroy our once proud reputation in the global community.
