For those of you that don't know Serial ATA is going to be the successor to the current ATA/66, ATA/100, ATA/133 shit. It's going to be the standard for optical drives(cdrom, cd burner), and hard drives. The reason I'm excited about it is it supposed to give SCSI a run for its money. Right now the first revision isn't going to be way faster. But the first revision will get rid of master/slave bullshit and will make the interface more intelligent. The 3rd revision is rumored to be 450 MB/S :::drool:::. First Serial ATA hard drives ship next month.

So the question is. How long before you will succumb and sell your soul for Serial ATA?

You know when you got lots of shit running. And you want to get to your C:/Porn/ folder. But when you click on My Computer it starts chugging and choking. You won't have that anymore. That especially sucks when you got your dick in your hand.

Not only that but current ATA standards are topping out. So that means 200 GB hard drives to fill up with porn coming in a month.
What's the additional cost over standard IDA?
Never went SCSI because "cost vs. lack of patience" just didn't work out for me.
Right now you will need either a motherboard that supports it(and those will be rolling out in a little bit) or a pci Serial Ata controller card for about $30-$40.

The drives should not cost much more than current drives except the first drive will probably be huge(200 GB huge) so you would pay a premium based just on the amount of size but in a few months the cost may be attractive.
I like the external type storage devices that i can keep refilling.

I recently purchased a Iomega Peerless drive that holds 10 and 20 gig cartridges. Sure, i'd need 10 20 gig carts to match the ATA and it may not be as fast but i'm not limited to 200 gig either and I can pull the plug out and pick it up and take it anywhere and pop it into another PC or laptop at will.

Serial ATA will be something to catch on slowly. Until they start making it standard in pc's. And I don't know if that will ever happen. SCSI rocks, but it's expensive therefore making it unattractive for most users. I don't know if they will be able to keep the cost down, but if they can, it will rock.
I will wait 3 more years when my 600 PIII is a dinosaur. So far it seems that only GTA3 is making my computer a dog. But a friendly, happy dog and I don't have GTA3 yet. I figure in 3 years (21 dog, 150 computer) it will be time to put mine to sleep.
Well, my P4 1.4 Ghz will be outdated later this year. damn, maybe I should have gotten a PIII 600 then. :crackhead:
Depends what you used your computer for. Since I have lost my cable modem, I hardly turn the thing on anymore. I put Half~Life onto the work computer, so all I am truly missing out on is the plethora of p02n. Let's see how long I last.....
I'm considering getting those cheap firewire cases for about $40 and sticking in one my secondary hard drives in there for external storage. You could get a 200 gig hard drive and do that too. A lot of the drives that are coming soon are going to support current ATA and serial ata. But they will perform better with serial ata.

I think the first phase of Serial ATA will be a decent first step by getting rid of bullshit master/slave crap and giving more headroom. I don't think it will even challenge scsi for at least 2 years. But I think it will make SCSI even less attractive.

BTW, Maynard you know what sucks about getting a first-generation p4. Not being able to take a 1.6 ghz Northwood and overclocking to 2.4 ghz lol. Which is what I'll be doing in the coming weeks.
I have no reason or desire to overclock my machine. It does what I want. If I want more speed, I'll go buy a new one.

Time it takes to overclock 1.6 ghz p4 to 2.4 ghz. 3 minutes. You got to be really lazy to not waste 3 minutes to get a 50% overclock. And I think you are just upset cause you won't get a 50% overclock on that Willamete P4.
Ummm....no. I really don't want to run the extra fans, or whatever cooling system is needed to keep that processor cool.

I'm perfectly comfortable with my PC the way it is.




NOw....if I can only get rid of this pesky WIN2K.....
Pentium 4 overclocks that well on stock cooling. No extra fans needed unless you want to go further.

And I'm not sold on overclocking either, I think it causes more trouble than its worth.
FYI, SCSI is pronounced "Skuzzy".

Pfft 800 mhz overclock and 50% fsb increase. There is a huge performance difference.
