I liked the interface and never had a problem with Winamp to this point. However, I ask you all to join me in a boycotting Winamp5 because solely because of the invasive AOL for Broadband advertising that is built in.

Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with them putting a shortcut on the desktop, or in my favorites. But, they not only did both of those, but also put a link in my Links folder in my favorites and a link in my start menu.

I understand that they need some advertising to keep the program free, but now they're charging for a premiere type service. WTF?!?!?

Winamp has remained to this point the only freeware without any ads or other crap, and that's one thing that made it great.

I'm sticking with Winamp2 for some streams that don't support WMP, but only for that. I agree that WMP's DRM sucks monkey nuts, but at least you can disable it or deny it when it comes up. Installing that many shortcuts to a horrible service is simply deplorable.

Thanks to AOL, Winamp has now become LOSERAmp, IMHO.

I've been using Winamp5 for a few weeks now.

There were no AOL links installed when I installed Winamp.

I like the fact that I can use real skins now.

It's very stable and sounds better (on my PC) than WA2.91 did.

I see no problem with WA5 - in fact, I highly recommend it. I also have a pre-release beta, maybe that's why I don't have the advertising.

I also got a key and unlocked the "pro" features, which essentially allow you to burn/rip music from cd's, but I use CD-DA Extractor for that - still, it's nice to have.

i use music match because it has a really nice library. i have all my mp3s sorted beautifully.

Goat, maybe you had an earlier beta than the one that I got, but the one that I got tried three times to access the Net on some AODOL(or some shit) executable and even when denied, still put mad shortcuts on my system.

I'm not saying that the software is shit, I'm only saying that we shouldn't have to jump through hoops to avoid having bullshit installed on our computers when all we want is a decent media player. Pre-AOL winamp always avoided that. Post-AOL winamp appears to be going against that standard.

So yeah, it may be a good program, but fuck AOL and their bullshit links to their bullshit software.

If I have broadband, why in the fuck do I need AOL? If you think you need AOL, then you deserve the bullshit they add into all of the software that they now own and distribute.

its because the kid who originally made winamp isn't working on it anymore. aol bought winamp from him for like 70 million (maybe more) when he was giving it away for free, just so they could give it away for free. then that kid made a filesharing program (much like dc++ but with a bunch of security key things) that he hosted on his website, and aol said no to that and made him take it down. he then said f u to them and took his 70+ million and left. if he was still around he probably wouldn't have let them add all that crap in.

Much to my chagrin, they do allow you to opt out of the shortcuts. So, I think I'll be withdrawing my boycott. However, I still think that forcing *ish* like this is a shady way to market any product. Isn't it enough that we have to watch product placement in our TV shows?

So in the end, if you install Winamp5, make sure to uncheck the option for AOL shortcuts and also tell it that you have no internet connection.
