good question
Keyser Soze Wrote:yeah but that doesnt mean Yes and Dream Theater necessarily is "good" music.
that's not all I listen to - while I might enjoy a lot of progressive metal, I like classic rock, classic metal, even some contemporary rock.

what's considered popular music today is nothing more than prepacked shit - every new act or band is more or less designed to fit in to what the tastes of today's youth is, to pump up CD sales - period.

Britney/Christina/Mariah (since they were used in this thread, but there are countless more acts) don't write their material, and if they do write anything it tends to suck. At least the bands I listen to write their own shit, work hard at getting it right and don't cater to the recording industry to put out what THEY consider to be a "good cd".

I was reading an atricle today regarding Aerosmith, and how their latest CD hasn't sold much, but it's actually a pretty kickass cd (the writer's words, not mine - I'm not really a fan). Anyway, the CD was a return to roots, so to speak - less horns and bullshit ala "Love in an Elevator" and more rockin' blues - and the band said of the cd sold well, they'd consider writing more like that - but apparently today's youth doesn't give a shit about that and would rather hear MTV-friendly crap because the CD hasn't sold well at all, so to make money they gotta go back to that "Love" crap (which I disagree with, but they've been whoring themselves to MTV for 20 years now, it's kinda too late for them to stop).

So while Dream Theater and RUSH might not sell out the Garden, or be played all over the radio, they do write what they play, they believe in what they write, and they do have a stronger fanbase than these here-today-gone-tomorrow acts that are churned out every year.
By the way, this is coming from someone who could sit and listen to Norah Jones all night.
I am wildly caucasian and/or really have zero taste in any and all types of art.
dream theater might write their own music, it doesnt necessarily mean its any good. of course, music opinion is subjective. i find RUSH, Yes, Dream Theater and most prog rock very pretentious and trying way to hard to be technically showy. i'll take a 3 chord ramones tune over most of that crap anyday. but thats just my opinion.
only prog rock that i can stand is Pink Floyd. King Crimson wasn't bad either.
i too like floyd
First concert I ever saw was King Crimson on the Pier 1983. $10 to get in.
I'm not about to try and get on a sopbox and say what I listen to rules and everything else sucks - it is subjective. What I was trying to say was that pretty much all popular music today isn't written by the people performing it - it's all a sham, and it's all prepackaged. I have more respect for bands that suck but write their own music than performers who pass off music written for them by Swedes.

did you have to leave your gun with the coat check girl?
No security check points then, duh. We could wander around with machine guys and spray the streets and nobody did shit.

were you even watching all season long, or did you just tune into the finale
I thought the only song that Dream Theatre ever wrote or performed was Pull Me Under? That was a great song.

they've done quite a bit more since then - and that song kinda sucks, it's way too repetitive.
Christina has a great voice but has only a couple of decent songs, beautiful was ok but most of her shit is just garbage just the same churned out sex crap that everyone under the sun churns out i.e Kelis, Lil' Kim, Mya, etc etc.

Britney is not even an entertainer, I watched that bullshit live show she did on cable and I was just amazed people pay to go see that shit.

Beyonce can't go wrong with an ass like hers, I dont give a fuck what shes singing about.

i think thats pretty much commonly accepted
what about someone who beautifully plays Mozart on Piano? It might not be their music, but they still are respected for the way they play. Or someone who dances to someone else's choreography?

The voice is an instrument just like any other. Just because they don't write the music doesn't make them not a musician.

I agree cause then you have to say you don't respect Frank Sinatra and that my friends will make me lift the no banning rule.
Keyser's girlfriend talks to him as if she's trying to get him to leave her alone.
she is
What about Alicia Keyes?? She can sing, play piano, and isn't too bad to look at.
Amy Lee of Evanescence is no slouch either, and I would take her over any of them in a heartbeat. Except Mariah, now there's a girl I would love to get in the sack with, crazy chicks are good like that.
