Post OS X: OS X is my worst enemy. Its font handling, and software developers inability to figure out the mess Mac has made, has us completely fucked. Then, on a new version of OS X...Panther, they changed how it deals with fonts again, and didn't bother telling the companies (namely Quark). OS X is not only non intuitive, it is volatile with publishing software..and classic mode is the biggest mess on the planet.
OS X has been our biggest problem. Mac. Not our clients, our editorial dept, or anything else. Mac has completely fucked us by not communicating their changes and helping developers work with the system.
A PC may suck balls for consistency and speed, but the programs doesn't just suddenly stop working. The font handling is smoother, even if it's not the same level. and for gaming, web and business applications...a PC is perfect.
As a designer and responsible for managing our technology in our group, Mac OS X is driving me insane. We have partnered up with Quarkxpress, and they admit to having lots of problems as they try to rewrite Quark completely for OS X.
And as far as stability goes...OS X has been the worst out of any system OS i have ever used. It's supposed to avoid complete system crashes. Yeah right. I've had more using it than ever on OS 8 or 9. Sure I cna shgut down programs...but fonts encompass more than one..and fonts are the biggest weakness to OS X.

That's what happens when you completely change the underlying code of the OS. OS X is Unix based...it's the only mac OS to do that and Mac wasn't fully prepared for some of the stuff that could happen with it. I dislike Mac's because I find PC's easier, more widely used, and there's just plain more options for software and hardware on a PC. In addition, I'm a gamer, web designer, and a programmer. I use PC for all of those unless I need to do some C coding and for that I just use Linux.

for our school newspaper we use macs and quark. we went through that font shit last year. really frustrating. i think we're using os x 10.2 now, and when we tried to go to 10.3 it just messed everything up again, so we stuck with 10.2.

yeah...we cannot advise going up to 10.3 over here for me, as well. We are using Quark 6 so that we can stay away from classic mode, but finding inherent bugs where screen fonts come in looking like garble. Which requires me to work in both Quark 5 and 6. I'm going to be beta testing Quark 7, but don't hold out much hope that it will solve all our problems..more likely cause new ones. Extensis suitcase is another huge culprit. That font program is very flakey, and we moved to Font Agent, which is more designed for OS X, and it's better...but still not exactly smooth sailing. There is also a bug in Adobe Photoshop, where if you load a font, you need to close it out and restart the program. And Illustrator is a nightmare....we'll have final PDF or EPS or Quark files that we want to make into an Illustrator EPS (Illustrator provides cleaner EPS's for 4 color print) and very often it will not hold the embedded fonts in the job, or there is replacement issues. And the advertisers, when we receive materials, don't provide fonts, when they are embedding them in the job.
anyway...back to my point...OS X and Mac just simply have made my job much more difficult than it should be. and when we speak to IT people, or other companies, or even other publishing firms...they seem to be having the same problem. Our IT consulktants, when we bring them in... the new thing on my G5 is that Extensis won't even work now, even though it's been re-installed....their answer, b/c they don't know the reason, is to wipe the computer and reinstall the software from scratch. I told them no way. So, on another G5, they did this to...and it still has residual problems. So even the IT people have not a clue. Nobody seems to know...and people sit at these Mac conferances and kiss their ass. It's a love-in. It's bullshit.
My next step is go to Apple. But I already know their answer....they'll say it's not their fault that software developers can't program, and OS X is a godsend.
